I'll throw my hat in:

My fave was Prog 1831 (Ben Willsher's wraparound) 'cos Dredd looks so damned stoic and, well, Dredd-like. Where Wagner and Flint broke my heart in the last panel of Day of Chaos, this cover put him back in the saddle and sent him back on the streets. I got a pleasant surprise when I saw it was a wraparound too!

Second for me was Leigh Gallagher's 1836, stunningly clever piece of design that looks deceptively simple but is then dazzlingly complex. Brilliant!

Third for me was 1830's Gunheadz by Boo Cook (shamelessly ripped off from Maurice Aitken.) Great character design, superb special effects and even the house number written in the corner by the newsagent. Tops!

The Enigmatic Dr X

A lot of them feel the same. That's an observation, not a criticism. They seem to have the same scale or something. I dunno. I don't do drawing, I do looking.

And I liked looking at:

3rd: 1828
2nd: 1821
1st: 1832

Hello, can we have no mode 'Dredd with a monster enveloping him' for a while?

3 points - 1836 - Defoe - stark design, beautiful art and the best fat hero of the ages.
2 points - 1832 - sin/dex - just a great pose and atmosphere embodying the return to form of sin / dex, a strip that rocks when it's protagonists are taking a kicking and rocking the Hammett vibes.
1 point -  1830 - needs the retro logo etc to really work but '235p Earth Money' brought one of the biggest smiles all year

Honourable mention to 1848 (more McMahon in prog please) and 1847 (more bad visual puns please).
Honourable honourable mention to Henry Flint for being unable to draw a less than awesome cover.
If I'd known it was harmless I would have killed it myself.

1st - 1831 - Dredd as Dredd should be.

2nd - 1847 - Faceboot!

3rd - 1836 - just brilliant design work.

Cheers

My opinion is not to be trusted: I think Last Action Hero is AWESOME. And What Women Want.

The art is fantastic on a number of other covers. But I'm also going on what catches your eye on the shelves, which tends to be iconic, bold silhouettes & figure work.

In reverse order....

3. Prog 1820 Simon Davies Ampney Crucis - A good cover needs to stand out on the shelf and this one with its alien wierdo does that in my book, the kind of cover that my 8 year old self would have laughed at and wanted to know what it was all about.

2. Prog 1849 Clint Langley Slaine - A striking image of the celt himself, mean, moody and absolutely ready to chop you up with that large axe, the art combo of photo and digital waddamacallit works super well.

1. Prog 1836 Leigh Gallagher Defoe - Very very effective, needs a couple of views to get all the details in the image and it leaps out at you so effectively with the bold colours. Manages to also do something new with zombies in this age of they are everywhere you turn (no pun intended).

HM - The Cliff Robinson tribute cover felt real old school and was fun to examine and find all the amusing throwbacks to 2000ad's past.

In reverse order:

3rd place - Prog 1830
2nd place - Prog 1819
1st place - Prog 1836

I know it's early yet, but I can see a strong contender for cover of the year already!  ;)

Can we have a Meg cover of the year vote too? There were some cracking covers.
It's a joke. I was joking.

Last year there were some good covers, but nothing really mind blowing for me.  Only two really stood out for me when I received them in the post, so the third will have to be a pure aesthetic choice from what's left.

1830-  Looks better with all the text, it has to be said.  An amazing mock vintage 2000AD cover, it actually brought a smile to my lips when I removed it from it's cellophane covering.

1854-  A menagerie of 2000AD references and a treat for the eyes.

1853-  Just because of the skill demonstrated.

Honourable Mention to Henry Flint's covers, I have been a fan since seeing his artwork in the first prog I ever got.

Dishonourable Mention to Clint Langley's covers, I just can't stand that man's artwork.
