Hope for a Dredd Sequel?

If there is a Dredd sequel, the first thing they have to get right is the choice of story. I know Alex Garland is talking about taking Dredd to the Cursed Earth, and then introducing Judge Death at a later stage, but to me that would be a mistake.

I did love Dredd, but the thing that disappointed me most was the bad guy (or gal). She was basically a drug dealer, which was a kind of domestic villain, not very interesting and to me the second star or the Judge Dredd comic is  Mega City 1 and all that it contains, the least of them being drug dealers. The Cursed earth is pretty bland and unfuturistic, and would be a low budget choice of set. Mega City 1 done with the right budget would be fantastic.

By all accounts Alex Garland wants to kick start a trilogy of Dredd movies by slowly introducing the character of Dredd to an audience that is not familiar with him. That again would be a mistake, you don't need to make a slow, boring introduction to a fantastic character like Dredd, he needs to explode onto the screen and capture the publics imagination, then they'll be interested in his back story.

Take the first Terminator movie for example. Where was the back story? There wasn't any. It was a kick arse movie, everyone loved it and it sparked several sequels as well as a TV series, which gave you all the back story you could want. That's the time and place for a back story, when the public are interested in the character. If they really want the general public to know who Dredd is, then a short voiceover at the beginning, explaining what Dredd is all about would be enough. They could be done in 30 seconds. You can then get on with Dredd kicking Judge Deaths arse.

That would be the movie to kick start a Dredd franchise, co-staring Judge Death and all the other Dark Judges. They are made for cinema and with a big enough budget and current CGI technology you can't go wrong.

Quite simply, if they make a Dredd it has to have Judge Death.

And finally, I cannot understand why they called the movie Dredd. You spend nearly 4 decades building a brand name, which is what Judge Dredd is to Rebellion and you don't use it properly. I know a few people who read 2000AD as a child and they knew who Judge Dredd was but they didn't associate Dredd with Judge Dredd. It might be obvious to all the fans, but to a lot of 40 somethings, who are only hearing about Dredd through a subtle and sub-standard advertising campaign, it didn't really register that it was actually Judge Dredd.

Anyway, that's just a minor gripe. Now I'm off to bed.

Disagree with everything you've said, Tarantino. Sorry. All this has already been discussed in the movie threads though. Doesn't make much sense to start all over again.

I'll broadstroke my responses:

There's already a movie called Judge Dredd. Sylvester Stallone was in it.

If there's a sequel, it's going to be low budget. You're not going to see the MC-1 from the comics.

Garland's a writer with a ton of experience making movies. He knows what he's doing.

Posting style's all wrong, even if the sentiments are familiar...

It does feelings so familiar...

I, Cosh

Erm.. Tarantino is a long-term member of the forum.

He's the guy who artificially inflated the value of Prog 2 by buying them all and then started hawking the ludicrous discarray (tm.) No word on a sequel to that venture? The mp3Array?
We never really die.

Not sure how I got confused with he who shall not be named. He was purposefully offensive, I just had an opinion on the movie. I didn't try and offend anyone. How are the sentiments similar?

The prog 2 thing didn't go too well and don't get me started on the Discarray's, I still have 500 in my celler. I'm selling them for a tenner each, including postage if anyone's interested, they used to be £29.99 plus postage.

:)

What's the discarray? Sounds familiar but I can't think what it is.

Didn't mean to offend. The obsessive insintence that the film should have been call Judge Dredd seemed horribly familiar.

Now here's my cue, I can't believe you guys fell for me posting a link to the Dredd sequel in order to sell my Discarray's. Sounds devious, like something that he who shall not be named would do  ;)

Anyway, it's a picture frame you can use to display all your CD's/DVD's, well between 8 and 16 discs in each frame, depending on size. Most of your discs have some great artwork on them and you can use the frame to create your own display. They looking stunning, I can't understand why I only sold half.

Oh and I didn't read the other threads related to the name of the movie, I didn't realise that it had been under discussion. I shall spend more time on research before I post again.

Read The Cursed Earth saga, Origins, etc, etc, then tell me it's a bland setting!   ;)

In comparison to Mega City 1.

I just think there is so much more potential within the walls.

Also, The Cursed Earth just reminds me of Mad Max films.
