"There was an experimental animated LOTR, "

yeah it was great ! as the film went on the techniques got wierder, then for mass ork armies they found it cheaper to get real people dressed up & crudely colour them in. there was more & more live action then suddenly it stopped back right in the middle of nowhere, with a mumbled voice over " blah blah , & then lots more stuff happened & it was the end"  ....IIRC.

It was a true classic, recently re-released on dvd and video just before the Fellowship of the Ring came out.  Think it made the dvd bestsellers didn't it?

The animated version of Lord of the Rings was made by none other than Ralph Bakshi (forgive the spelling- I don't have the disc jacket to hand) of Ren and Stimpy fame.

I was told none completion of the animated LotR was due to a lack of funds.. damn shame.

Another shorter animated fantasy he made, I believe before LotR is Fire and Ice. Both are worth checking.

Try a Borders bookshop if there's one near or online- a mate of mine got a cheap copy from HMV Australia last year.

Didnt run out of funds, Bakshi  got screwed by the studios.
The story at its most very basic is that they didn't market the film as a 'first parter', as the film was intended to be, and so nobody in the general public expected a sequel.
Subequently, the studios refuse to fund the sequel!

If i thought it'd get allowed on this message board, I'd call the  studios c*nts!

And The Hobbit would be a 'kin ace film!!

I dont know why I know this but, th ehobbit and Return of the King have been made as cartoons and turn up regularly on US TV. They are horribly animated and look nothing like the Lord of the Rings animated film. Anyone out there wit knowledge as I'ld be really interested in what the stiry is behind these films.

Gah it looks as bad as I'ld heard! Return of the King doesnt look as if it would give Peter Jackson nightmares either.
