I'm up to the Cursed Earth bit. My guess is the rumours surround changes to British law regarding parody, which aren't through the Commons yet. I'm not sure how said laws would affect those strips anyway.

They were due to come in on the 1st of June, but didn't - 'as soon as possible' http://www.ipo.gov.uk/copyright-exceptions.htm How this actually affects Cursed Earth reprints, I don't know - could be that the agreement with General Mills trumps any copyright law amendments.

Judging by Keith Richardson's apparent lack of awareness of these developments and his repeated insistence that The Cursed Earth is better without those episodes, it would seem unwise to hold your breath waiting for new editions. Interesting news regarding their plans for more reprints featuring the original colour pages and hardback covers, alá the Mek-Files.

The last I saw, the two things holding this up were corporate and legal lobbyists attempting to declaw the aspects on personal back-ups and parody (i.e. the two bits that actually matter); pretty much the only thing already in law is the means for people with disabilities to format-shift without risk of prosecution.

It depends what agreement was reached, and whether any agreement survives buy-outs. Frankly, the content itself is extremely tame to the kind of parody you see elsewhere all over the place AND which doesn't result in lawsuits in the UK; however, Rebellion being a small publisher is right to be cautious, especially when the 'opposition' would be much larger brands.

I think it has more to do with the fact an agreement between General Mills and IPC/Fleetway about the story Soul Food was agreed; whether any successive legislation should supercede that or be retroactive is not known yet, but, it's not confirmed that Burger Wars was part of any agreement or if it was withdrawn from publication just in case- so that story may benefit from a relaxation of the law.

Another great episode. Cheers for asking my questions Rich; enjoyed the lads' answers. Although my plan to break into the Oxford archives has been thwarted.

When Rich finishes reading out TordelBack's paragraph of a question regarding the ratio of monochrome art to colour strips, he actually mutters "brilliant ..." under his breath. Good news that Pye's going to look into the issue of double page spreads being presented as single pages in digital format, although the fact he was unaware of that happening does sort of suggest that no-one involved in the comic reads the prog review threads round here.
