Thanks for reminding me.

Don't usually read HB, only occasionally, but tend to pick up special stuff like this when it comes around.

Yeah HB picked up since Carey started writing it... not quite up the best of Ennis/Ellis madness but much better than the horrors of recent times. Constantine being written by a yank is just wrong. Looking forward to seeing the mighty Jock's artwork

Though this episode he gets mad tattoos, which is just plain wrong. I juts hope they're the kind that fade after one episode...

jock

Don't worry Art- they're just inked on markings, not permanene tattoos...

Glad to hear it. We can't have one of comics finest characters wandering about looking like a member of Limped Biscuits for the rest of his career :-)

Whjat I want to know is that if he's a hard-smokin' anti-hero, why does he smoke Silk Cut and not something more fierce, like Marlboro?

(Yes, yes, before any Dreddconners chip in, I know I smoke Silk Cut too, but I can't handle anything stronger.)

Ever on the search for extra Thrills - is it too late to (be arsed to) get into Hellblazer? Would it be best to start at when Carey took over?

A quick Google search later

Mike Carey took over writing #175-181 (the current issue?)
Assuming that these are still available somewhere that wouldn't be too many back issues to get hold of...

If that's the 'straight to Hell' site I can recommend it very highly- Great stuff.

P.S.- Odd, the issue I've drawn is a stand alone story (#181)so it'd work fine as a jumping on point. It does however hint at the bigger plot line that Mike's building- but hopefully that'd just intrigue you enough to keep reading!! The titles the best it's been in years in Mike's hands.

Cheers

Mike Careys run makes much more sense if you pick up a copy of the "Haunted" TPB, which covers the introduction of some of the characters in Warren Ellises run.

Hellblazer has had lots of highpoints, like the absoultely brilliant six parter that Ennis did just after the Ellis run, or the really rather touching Neil Gaiman/Dave McKean episode, but to me the best Constantine moments were in Swamp Thing when Alan Moore originaly introduced the character.

Oddboy

Ta Jock, I'll probably get this issue (your plug worked!) before thinking about issues gone by, but I doubt I'd go further back then Carey's run because my comics bookshelf only has limited space, & that is supposed to be for 2000AD & the Meg.

>the really rather touching Neil Gaiman/Dave McKean episode

Is that the same one that was in the Gaiman collection that DC put out a coupla years back (Midnight Days or something like that)? If so, that was a great story, and alone would make that collection wworth buying, though a lot of the other stuff in there is also damn good (I particularly liked Gaiman's take on the original Sandman - the one with the gas mask, sleep gas, etc).

I have to say there's not that much Hellblazer I wouldn't recommend - Garth's stuff is generally excellent, and the TPB of of the stuff I have from Warren's run is also pretty good. Azzarello's stuff is an acquired taste, but still a lot stronger than a lot of other comics you could be reading.

I'd definitely suggest picking up a few of the graphic novels as a good way of getting into the character.

Quirkafleeg

The character and style has changed a lot since the early days and changes from writer to writer. It's fairly easy to pick up and there a ton of sites out there to fill any gaps in just who the hell that character is.

Whilst Carey is not yet as good as the best stuff Ellis and Ennis or even the very early stuff that Moore and Delano did, it's a million times better than what came before.

Oh and thanks again for the HB GN, Gorden - tastey...

Facial tattoos.. good enough for Tyson, good enough for Constantine?
