If you made sense of that title, then you'll want to read this!

Obviously, it's only at the option stage, which as I've read, isn't really a start at all, although with Moorcock himself as co-producer, hopefully it'll be realised.

Note the hideous mistakes:

Calling Elric "Tolkien-esque" is a bit off the mark. If anything, "Lovecraftian" might be close. But as Moorcock "created", or more probably "championed" (oo, did you like that?) the multiverse idea, I wouldn't want to pigeon-hole him. BUT, as far as publicity goes, the word "Tolkien-esque" probably goes a long way, especially now.

Elric wasn't exiled, he left Yrkoon in charge and buggered off for some adventures himself.

Elric has never had any desire to discover his "humanity".

Who's excited???

I have fantasised about this film for a long time.  I think you could make a more enjoyable and accesible film thatn LOTR, which of course we have to thank for it being made.

Smiley

Saw this on the Ceefax yesterday and thought "Yeah, right." Last I heard, Moorcock was miffed (as always and with every right to be) because Brad Pitt or someone similar with too much money and a desire for a 'pet project' wanted to make it. Movie stars, eh?

Whatever, it won't be Elric without the junkie subtext.

Marbles

I'd rather see 'Hawkmoon' - the evil Gran Bretane & Castle Brass etc..fantastic stuff.
Remember - dry hair is for squids

True.

Elric - a bad-ass elf dude, but he's really pretty and wears black and mopes around a lot feeling dorry for himself, and he's got this sword that's a total metaphor for drug addiction.  And don't foget he's pretty and wears black a lot.

Paging Johnny Depp...

Mudcrab

Brad Pitt? Nasty!

Yep, very true. Read the message board on multiverse.org, where they reckon it'll be a struggle to get it made properly as an 18 (or R or whatever it is in the US). Let's hope they don't change things to get a happy ending!

Indeed we do, there's never one film of the same type these, so I'm hoping this will get through to production.

Funny you should say that. Was thinking Terry Gilliam would be a good director for it, given his experience of not letting Hollywood mess about with endings, plus he deserves to get to make a even bigger massiver fantasy epic than he already has (sort of) with other films.

And who does said director seem to enjoy working with? Can't really picture it myself, although he'd probably be a good choice.

Generally Contrary

What, John Cleese as Elric?

I think you could probably use 'Moorcockian' and people would know what you meant...
The wages of sin are death, but the hours are good and the perks are fantastic.

Wood

If Hollywood change the ending and have him living happily ever after with Cymoril, I'm hiring someone to blow up Universal studios.

Wood

And anyways, it's gonna spend about three yeas in development hell anyway, if it ever gets made.

So, no I'm not that excited. My first reaction was, "they're going to butcher it."

Mudcrab

Ha ha, that would be classic! Be just like Lancelot. Can't help killing people and sucking out their souls.

"Sorry, sorry, dreadfully sorry"

I'll give you a hand. I'm hoping that as the article says, Moorcock will be co-producing and will have a fair amount of control over what happens to the character, as he's knocked back a few offers in the past that would have twisted the character into something he's not. Now we've certainly seen that happen before.

Arioch: "Tremble before me, foolish mortal"
Elric: "I noo yoo'd say that"

:o)
