I've got a Kindle Fire HDX. The bigger one, as I wanted a fairly large screen to read comics on. (I think it's the 8.9.) It's very good.

Whichever version you get, I think they have a similar OS (basically Android with Amazon's own tweak, with carousel, etc.) It's pretty intuitive, so I don't think a beginner will have any issues with it.

Be wary of the new £50 Fire, though, because you very much get what you pay for. It's also worth noting that Amazon's app ecosystem is significantly restricted compared to Google Play's (which itself is very limited compared to what you get on iOS). If your wife is only interested in popular fare, one of the more expensive Amazon tablets (or a Hudl 2) might do the job. But shop around a bit and take a look before you buy.

I got one last Christmas and love it.
I do pretty much all my reading on it, and have it playing Netflix or Amazon prime (movies or music) pretty much constantly as I write.
