Surely, you not a old friend I know outside of this forum pretending to be practically a stranger & why the use of yellow?
Wha'? This thread is for voting, not chat but just to answer: image Google 'Savage Sword of Conan' and the second image to come up has a yellow and red masthead, hence me using that colour scheme.

Now I see.....

JayzusB.Christ

Jesus, this was a tough choice.
But. 1 - Jon - Warp spasm
2 - Chima Khalid - Slaine
3 - Iamthesystem - 2000bc.

it broke my heart not to include some of the others; amazing stuff

I know this looks like a donkey vote, (From the order I chose them being in the same order it's shown!) but that is just a coincidence....

One. Jon's Massimo Warp-Spasm Despite the source, you actually make this look better. As I was never a fan the late artist work on Slaine-Spasm & more fond of his scenic backgrounds. The colour really works too.

Two.  Leigh Sheppard's Massimo Feg-Mebd Duet is another improvement on the source. That's a better looking Feg, but not so sure about Priestess. Aside from her signature hair style, her face seem odd to me.  Those freckles must be tattoos from their uniform application & numbering. That's just odd, but otherwise well done. The inclusion of the map taken from very first progs/graphic novel. That might be Angela's work. This only adds to the overall effect.....

Three. Nic Freeman's Gene Simmons is Slaine close-up reworking of one of my favourite covers....Gene Simmons (Genius:)) signature tongue poking only improves on the original Slaine's look of temporary loss of mental faculty's & KISS is one of my favourite bands. Gene himself was well known wielding a guitar made up to look like a large Axe.  Also for his collecting & making a mint off selling comic books earlier in his career & might have been driving force behind the official line of KISS comics featuring themselves. Amazingly detailed hair BTW.

Honourable Mentions go to.....

Albion 2's The Ferocious Axe of Slaine At first I found merging of Pat Mill'
s
greatest creations sheer Genius. I always figured if they had to meet in cross over then, Nemesis would naturally be one of the dark-gods hinted at in Slaine's world & I think stated that the Arch-Deviant is a Dark-God in his own universe. So, I think that's a done deal. Aside from  hinting, I not sure why Nemesis has never made a proper Slaine cameo. I found that based on old Conan comic book or pulp novel cover this morning.

AllisterMac's  Slaine's Night out with Best Mates is best very well drawn, but poorly executed....I'm afraid. I only really like the inclusion of the Knucker which might have done Glenn Fabry's new poster picture more justice if was put into it's background. In this one Slaine is stripped of usual te usual tartan trews. He's dressed more to attract the ladies, here, I guess. Not normally a problem, but knot what I'm used to. Because, why not just have him go Skyclad. Aside, censorship here, maybe that could be done tastefully. It's not like 2000AD Magazine has ever held back before. What else can I say, but while the attention to detail is amazing, the posing & Slaine's head to body ratio seem wrong, unless this him going into one of famous spasms. This seems reflected in more minor ways I as I look left to right here. Like their stopped fighting to pose for a snapshot. While Ukko sits at his imaginary writing desk facing the viewer in the foreground. Your talent overshadows your ability to compose it.  Hope you find my criticism constructive & not destructive. Otherwise, keep up what great work you can do.

Andy Lambert's Tharg the Mystical Love this work, & cannot find any fault with it except that I there are only slots for 1st, 2nd & 3rd.

I Am The System's Slaine/Dredd Pulp Cover. Amazing use of colour & it's almost makes up for lapse of proportion here.  They do both look like midgets wearing rubber masks, but otherwise this piece would make for great advertising for this projection into the medium of fantasy/crime-noir.

Steve Denton's - Niamh & Renegade Templar Are great & might have found their way into any of the first three places if not for the other work I had a preference for. I now believe Niamh should have got more panel time in the Slaine strip or a spin-off of her own. While Renegade Templar is what if this happened after being sent to the past or a alternative inverse where technology is replaced by dark age gear/weaponry & magic. Great work as well. No problems there at all.

Stuartcatley - Dredd Knight Superb, but not what I favoured.

Jon

I'd like to concur with the general feeling of toughness. I wasted an hour yesterday, changed my mind about seven times, and then abandoned the whole endeavor. So, the best I can say is that this is my Tuesday morning vote. My Thursday evening vote may be very different...

1 - stuartcatley - Knight Dredd
I love sketchy work. Nice design, bold, and beautifully executed (a pun? Who knows...)

2 - Andy Lambert - Tharg the Mystical
Strong lighting, nicely composed, looks like a lot of love and effort went in to it.

3 - Steven Denton1 - Niamh
Definitely the hardest slot to fill, and many other choices have cycled in and out. But, you know, multiple figures, nice penmanship, etc.

HMs

  • amines2058 - Mongrol the Ogre - this was in and out of my top three. There's just something about it. Ask me again tomorrow...  :(
  • Leigh Shepherd - Feg & Mebd - this as well. Great Feg!
  • Paul Moore - Slaine - clearly a great artist
  • Nic Freeman - Kiss My Axe - for sheer dedication to hair. And Kiss.
  • IAMTHESYSTEM - 2000 BC - fantastic pulp fiction feeling to it.

Did genuinely love all the entries, and I've ended up making my choices on what I believe to be artistic acumen and effort.

Steven Denton
