Ha! Conversely, Tripods was my very first experience of an adaptation being "not as good as the books." My dad had bought them to keep me occupied on a family camping holiday a couple of years earlier.

That's the best I can do, but I'm sure someone on this forum can make a reasonable claim to have been an elitist snob long before 1982.

If only! I'm equally excited and jaded with a 'probably too good to be true' outlook, meaning despite what sounds like good intentions, I fear that they'll find a way to muck it up, or just not have the money or technical expertise to do it justice.
