Learning today that the sumptuous Mandalorian locations were all achieved in a studio gives me hope that anything is possible.

Yeah… that was pretty startling (and impressive) stuff.

It's been around for a while - ARWall were pitching it around 2 years ago, but seemed to have got overlooked by the Disney juggernaut.

Sony also have their own version being used for a Ghostbusters demo.

Here's a behind the scenes from Epic/Unreal

I remember seeing some demo stuff on YouTube a while back that looked very impressive, but this is the first time (I think) I've seen the technology in use.

Yeah, I'm not sure how much was used final shots though. If you had character heavy backgrounds, I'm not sure Unreal would cope with that compared to just using it for backgrounds.

My instinct is it might have been used for long focal length shots where the background is slightly out of focus going by Jon Favreau's comments here.

https://youtu.be/apLzZBqfqeU?t=4697

I think it's of a combination of approaches, some totally in camera, some just used for lighting/reflections, sometimes just used to bring in a green screen if they want to (shown on the unreal behind the scenes video)

in the same way they were giving the impression that BB-8 was mostly remote controlled, where in reality it was puppeteered for a lot of shots.

It's still impressive, and definitely a game changer, but I can imagine there are a few things that need to be sorted out - shooting with a b-cam would be a bit tricky - what the limits of slow motion are, would shaky cam moves be a real distraction for performers (as the background is locked to the camera)

And for action scenes where you want someone sprinting from A to B this must be quite limited.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!

Yep, I imagine it would need some thinking around. Treadmills and moving backgrounds for example.

Something like the John Wick 3 bike scene would work well though - having the background animated as if you're moving through it at speed + getting the reflections on the bikes.

Here's a podcast with the DoP of the Mandalorian and talks about the LED walls a bit.

That's impressive but allegedly th budget was $15 million per episode.

It's difficult to work out how much of that per episode cost is before or after including the development of newish tech like the LED volumes and building the walls in the first place.

If it's a significant part of the budget, and once it filters out, it's possible costs could drop, even if it's just other people doing their own tech but using a similar approach - I seem to recall ARWall posting on our fb page that their tech was a lot cheaper than Disney's.

Assuming planning permission goes as planned...

There's also a proposed studio near Bicester - not sure what stage that's at.

What, buying a hundred million pound complex to convert into a film studio isn't a sign?

Exciting isnt it!!! I think when this was announced a lot of people (myself included) assumed Rebellion had pitched this to a service and it was just going to get made and funded by Netflix or whoever very soon. Turns out they're doing it absolutely all themselves down to owning the very studio it is filmed in, so it may take a while yet! It should be incredibly faithful to the comics as a result. I wonder if it was pitched first, and then the feedback about what would need changing was what spurred them on to go full DIY.

If they've any sense they should be utterly faithful to the core aim of making great TV, and worry about the true-to-the-comic side later. We-the-true-fans are all going to give out shite about it no matter what.
