Rebellion unveils special hardcover edition of political comics classic featuring new scans of original artwork and Carlos Ezquerra variant cover

One of the defining political comics of the 1980s - Third World War - is back in a brand new hardcover edition from Rebellion Publishing.

Exploding from the pages of mature comics title Crisis in 1988, Third World War by Pat Mills and Carlos Ezquerra was a searing political satire on capitalism, commercialisation, imperialism, and exploitation that still rings as true today as it did in the '80s.

Using brand new scans of the original artwork supplied by the family of the late Carlos Ezquerra, this ground-breaking comic book classic is being collected in its entirety for the very first time.

This definitive collection will be available in paperback from all good book and comic book stores in January 2020. A special limited edition hardcover is only available from the Treasury of British Comics webshop.

Even in our post-9/11 world, Third World War continues to resonate - truly anti-establishment graphic novel dealing with ever-more prescient issues around capitalism, the power of corporations, and global politics, and unlike anything else published by the Treasury of British Comics imprint so far.

Eve is unemployed after leaving university and is immediately conscripted as a soldier working for a corporation and discovers just how South American countries are being exploited to create food needed to feed the increasing population for their profit under the guise of western paternalism.

Running in Crisis from 1988-1990, and including work by Angie Kincaid and Matt "D'Israeli" Brooker, this definitive edition highlights the stunning painted colour artwork of Ezquerra, who died last year, and reinforces his place as one of the masters of comic book art.

I've realised that if Rebellion are rescanning the artwork - are they taking the opportunity to update the lettering as well? Off the top of my head I don't recall who lettered the original strips, but surely moving to a more modern lettering look would be welcome?

This passed me by back in the day and I'll take a punt on this but with Pat and Carlos involved I'm hoping it's a banker.
By the way I'm I mistaken or does the character given the bird have resemblance to an angry Uncle Pat?
Citizens are Perps who haven't been caught ... yet!

The Original letterer was Gordon Robson
The guy giving the bird was based on a young punk he knew back in Colchester at the time as were all the other main characters

Actually asked this question elsewhere on the forum, but thought I'd try my luck again: Does anyone know how many volumes of 'Third World War' there will be? Many thanks!

Whether there are any more books probably depends on how many buy this one.

Exact details are difficult to come by, but this book will contain 'more than 200 pages', which would take us up to episode 14 or so (of 45 in total). Three books seems like a reasonable guess, but it's just a guess.

Also worth remembering that Ezquerra wasn't the artist all the way through.  As the series progressed it changed hands.

Plus, does the Finn strip from the prog count even though it was the Finn character from TWW?

Carlos Ezquerra only did 4 episodes of book2 along with John Hicklenton, Duncan Fegredo & Sean Phillips and several other artists
The official page count for each book as from the comic is:
Book 1: Episodes: 14,Pages: 196 of strip, plus 14 pages of text
Book 2: Episodes: 23, Pages: 322
Book 3: The Big Heat:Episodes: 8, Pages: 112
Book 4: Ivan's Story: Episodes: 3, Pages: 42 & The Final Problem, Episodes: 1, Pages: 14

It's an Absalom/Absolam thing.

Lovely work all round on that cover, I like how the title is split either sude of Eve's head to better reflect the double meaning.

The collection ends with the end of Book One in the comics.

After the first two books of Finn, which would both fit in one volume, the quality tailed off quite a bit. So one volume of that, which could also include the John Hicklenton episodes of Third World War, which bridge the gap between the Ezquerra episodes and Finn. I'd be happy with that.
