I was just about to vote 1992 and then Funt posted the full 1985 cover.  How the sneck did our parents let us buy this?  The potato legging it from Pulger's chainsaw is the clincher - 1985.

Well, the full beauty of the DR & Quinch cover comes into focus when it's perused in all its wraparound glory:

Ohh so many great details here...the sharks in the glass & bowl, the terrified bird (thing) and, as JBC points out, those little potatoes on the run. I think I prefer the back side of the prog!

I haven't checked but I think it references every single DR & Quinch story somewhere - from the pterodactyls to the oranges. Is their drill sergeant crawling out of the sack underneath Quinch?

The context is interesting as well - it's an homage to what, at the time, was mostly a 16-episode thrill that hadn't appeared in the prog for well over a year (83 issues). (Of course, there was the "Get Back to Nature" in the sci-fi special that went out the summer before this cover, but still.)

An angry nineties throwback who needs to get a room.

I've also just realised that I've been painting female Christmas elves sitting on beer barrels for craft beer pubs over the last three weeks, and have been trawling Google for references, which are limited.  If only I'd remembered about Chrissie there! (The gun would have been replaced by a long-stem beer glass, of course).

Well Santa is getting ready to deliver one of these covers an early present - a place in the final. Now I'm not sure but there might be quite the come back story developing here? Get your votes in and I'll count up in the morning...

VOTING CLOSED

Quite the story developing here. In the early group stages 1985's cover was down and out and only qualified as the best scoring third place cover but now...

1985 - 15 (maybe 16)*

1992 - 7 (possibly 8)*

It through to the final!!!! Can 1985 pull of the ultimate come back story. Be the Rocky of 2000ad Festive Fronts? Well we'll find out who its up against in the morning.

*I'm probably being thick but I genuinely couldn't work out what I'Cosh's vote of 7C1 referred to???

1985 in hexadecimal. Appropriate, since that's exactly when we were all typing it into our Spectrums, C64s and BBC Micros.

Exactly this, except it was that poor relative of the BBC - the Acorn Electron - where I debugged my first subroutines.

Sorry Colin. Will be sure to use the Dewey Decimal system for my next answer.
