Painted art or inked art?

Just curious as to who likes what?

I actually prefer inked art, whether b/w or subsequently coloured.  I just like to see people drawing comics, with lines.  I've seen painted art in the past that just seemed to be trying to hide the fact that they couldn't draw very well, or perhaps the fact they couldn't paint very well made it look like that.

Then there were all those dark and grimy painted stories.  I think Carl Critchlow is great but his nemesis and deadlock series was painted and it looked dark, grim and not very enjoyable (I think the repro process may have caused this).  Basically a lot of time and money wasted on something that doesn't need to be painted.  Fortunatley that trend is largely over.  I still don't mind the odd story or painted cover but I'm glad it's largely over.

The last painted slaine in prog 2001 (?) did look good. But the horned god was a bit lame after the first book when it was obvious there wasn't the time or inclination to draw anything but backgrounds.  It all ends with a lack of detail (I like detail and lots going on in a panel) and the dreaded turquoise wash for a background.  Yuk.

Still I'm sure plenty people of disagree and hurrah for that.

Ah ... the foul legacy of Bisley, which cast blighted shadow over the pages of our beloved comic for many a year.

And ... yeah, a fairly easy way of disguising a lack of basic drawing ability. See also: Mr Walker's use of nice, strong inks since all the work he put into getting his figure-drawing up to scratch paid off ...

Cheers

Have to vote for the black and white too. Might have something to do with harking back to the good ol days when the only colour was on the cover?
Think colour can work well if done properly - as Paul said, inked work coloured in rather than splashing it all over the place. Case in point is some of Dermot Powers Dredd work (Book Of The Dead especially) which has nice, bold clearly defined artwork.
Favourite line work guy at the mo is Jock. Needs to do more.
The perspective on that chairs all wrong

I visited Glenn Fabry's site (from the link on this one) and he was apoligisng for his first B/W art I aeons.  What!?!  His B/is fantastic.  That and Mike McMahon were my favourite slaine moments.

Oh well time to go to the newsagents and see if 2000AD has been delivered early.  Always the optimist.

Perhaps Glenn was referring to his pre-2000 AD work. It certainly didn't have the realism of 'Slaine'.
