The first Wednesday of each month is great.
Not only do I get 2k but the meg as well!!!!

Oh double the thrill power!

Great to see Clint Langley back too. Draws this week's cover. His colour art on Dinosty (old story) was amazing. Perhaps the best I ever saw in 2k?

Oh yeah, the cover of the new meg is a bit of a cheat! Classic Cliff Robinson art but it was also the cover of the very first Dredd novel 'The Savage Amusement' too! Way back in 1993. Still, it is a good piccy so who cares!

Oh well, me off to write an epic Dredd tale that I will post here for the next 20 weeks or so. Hope you don't mind...

scojo probably lying

Matt

Scojo, I would love to read one of your Dredd epics, but you always promise and never deliver! C'mon Scojo... By the way scojo me old mucka, what did you reckon to Grant's Dredd this week? Reckon its going to lead anywhere? A future epic maybe? Lets hope it's gonna be more than a Dredd catches skull headed bad guy and blows the shit out of him kind of story.

paulvonscott

It's a bit of a Stan Lee standoff at the moment, but I have to say I rather enjoyed it.

Fave line:

"Justice Department?  I want to report a rather grisley MURDER."

I bet it is a robot and the guy running it is a right geek.  I would LOVE it if it turned out to be PJ Maybe.

I was getting a bit worried about Grant and his lego, but this was fun.

Well regarding my Dredd epic...er..busy, yes that's it..!:O)

I haven't read this week's prog yet so can't comment. Get it later. On another site I read that Grant has given up writing comics and will do just the occasional Dredd. So who knows?

He is writing a novel, film and tv stuff and doing something with lego!
Strange but apparently true!

Speaking of bad guys, you remember that character who came from the future and killed people? The Generation Killer? He was this time killer guy who teleported in and wiped out a criminal's descendants. Prog 1212. Art by John Higgins. Wonder if he will ever return?

My guess is John Wagner is slowing down his Dredd input a little as he gets older so we will get more Rennie, Morrison and Grant one offs.

Got to admit, I groaned. I loathed the artwork on Dinosty. I thought it was well murky and overdone. Not a fan, I'm afraid.

Not to deliberately disagree with Scojo, but thought that Clint Langleys cover was complete pants, but I'm sure there are plenty who liked it.

Alan's just been to Denmark to do some stuff for Lego, so I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure Alan isn't. 8-)

Dinosty, what a complete piece of shit. C'mon Tharg, don't try and sneak the Langley droid in through the back door by starting him off on the occasional cover. The only thing this weeks cover did was make me appreciate Flints artwork even more! And whilst I'm on the subject of crappy art, what was going on with the last page of Bad Company? I knew the artwork throughout the 3rd book of Bad Company was crap, but by mixing it with images from the previous books highlighted how bad it had gotten. I had to go and flick through the Horned God to remind myself what good artwork looks like...

nathan

I  didn't like it either. Reminded me of the Bad Old Days.

"but thought that Clint Langleys cover was complete pants"

Nice, incisive criticism.  Cheers Logan, keep on moaning.

:)  No, just funning, though I actually I have to admit I liked it.  Never come across him before I don't think.  It was quite odd seing Shakara in colour and I thought the picture worked as one of the best covers so far this year.

What's wrong with it?  I appreciate taste is an unquantifiable subject, but was this 'dinosty' thing a bit rubbish?  Was that an influence, i.e. does he paint a better picture than strip?

Actually the only thing that didn't work was the red gene blade.  Just a red computer blob, not as good as the painting.  They should have just left those meesley little titles off.  Yuk.

Oh well, the actual strip trundled on with Shakara being as boringly indestructable as ever and more teases as to what the hell the strip is supposed to be about.

Oh well, must norkle!

nathan

"What's wrong with it? I appreciate taste is an unquantifiable subject, "

I just didn't like it, purely subjectively. The main reason for that is because its overwrought purple-brown-blue murkyiness reminded me of the late 80's/early 90's covers which were invariably poorly drawn and airbrushed to death.

Trying to be a bit more objective I would say there isn't much contrast between foreground and background, overall it's fairly dark, which doesn't make it leap off the shelves.

Shakara looks stiff and is just standing there like a prawn. Not very inspiring and certainly nowhere near as dramatic as a cover should be. Flint makes Shakara much more dynamic on the inside.

Apart from the lack of tonal depth there is no compositional depth either, nothing to draw the eye into the picture. Just a skinny bloke in a gimp costume doing some gentle tai chi.

There is also no wit or idea there, just dull.

Nathan the art critic.

What ho!

Completely disagree with you, but nice to know :)

I agree about all those sh*tty murky covers from the nienties.  At least my issue here looks quite ka little and around the logo (well that's neccesary).

I honestly think it stands out more than that frazer one last week, nice picture, duff colours, very dull and even the kano one looked a bit dull too, though again liked the picture.  Maybe repro techniques are harsh on them?

I won't say more about Shakara?  But anyone gaging for another series?  Grudd I hope it doesn't end on a big cliff hanger.

Find the 2 word that shakara actually says that are not shakara!

Having a brain the size of a normal brain I fortunately read Scojo's small print before I said my answers.  Which now I'm not going to do.

Really Scojo, I do worry about you.  Offering strangers kisses over the internet.  Haven't you heard those cautionary tales of young Scriptwriters lured into a life of decadence and filth!?
