Well, the 2000AD travelling exhibition has rolled into the sleepy town of Harrogate and what a stir it's making! Mercer Art Gallery bod, Janine, confirms that more adults have been through the doors than kids. Front page of local paper's review section devoted to pic of fool dressed as Dredd, last seen walking along the sedate streets of this upper crust Northern outpost of Southern snobbishness (apologies to all our Southern basta ... er ... readers)

Anyway, as part of the events being held to mark the exhibition, a Dennis the Menace artist called (I think) Paul Palmer (that may be grossly wrong but I'm pretty sure his last name was Palmer) is visiting to talk to local school kids. Yours truly being the local paper's only comics-fixated reporter, I have the merry job of interviewing him when he arrives ...

Now, I'm afraid that I went straight from reading Transformers to reading Tooth, so I've never even owned a copy of the Beano.

So, any particular questions/snippets of info about his career/infor I can use to sound knowledgable would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I get to interview our very own Kev Sutherland as well! Fancy that!

When did he draw Dennis? Was it the classic style, or was he involved in the early 90's costume change, or that more kiddie style of art?

I havn't even looked at the Beano for over a decade now. You could ask the old favourite about keeping up with the times, or being deliberately retro?

longmanshort

I think he's actually working on it now, hence the invitation to talk about it

Hmmm... Been years since I read the Beano properly- although I do have a story to tell (there's always a story).  It's not very interesting- but I'm going to tell you anyway...

Around three or four years ago, I was telling somebody that I remembered buying the 2000th issue of the Beano (complete with free Gnasher Snapper- I device I cunningly reconstructed during my call centre days- much to the annoyance of anyone in earshot- with *everyone* being in earshot) and that at the time, I had wondered if I'd still be reading the Beano, or if it'd even still be going, by the time the 3000th issue came out.

As I was boring them with this story, it occurred to me, after the application of some in-the-head-sums (never to be trusted at the best of times) that the Beono must be somewhere around the 3000 mark.  Mildly curious, I checked in the local newsagents that lunchtime- only to find that not only was it 'near' the 3000th issue- but that the Beono 3000 was that week's issue.  How cool is that?

Now then.  Mere coincidence- or had the super computer that is the human subconscious neatly ticked off those thousand weeks in my brain, leading me to the memory of Beano 2000- which led to the discussion with the friend, which in turn led me to the newsagents so that I could buy the 3000th issue?

Sorry, Mr M.  This doesn't help you in the slightest- but it's not a bad story.

As Beano stories go.
Pffft...

Did you ask Kev if he was stealing Brian Talbots life-force in oeder to keep himself perpetually young?

longmanshort

Are we sure they're two different people? Kev could be the morning person, while Bryan may be the evening person. Perhaps he has to go a regenerate in an ice coffin, like the fella in Dragonfire...

A travelling 2000AD exhibition? In Harrogate?

Blimey, if I'd known in time I could have popped down to visit my brother and sister and done a bit of 2000AD stuff as well.

So what was the exhibition all about?  And do you know any other dates?

I may have been ignorant and missed this tour being advertised but that won't stop mne saying.....zzttt... Chuckle Brothers mode engaged....zzzzttt...

The fact that this tour has not been publicised is disgraceful and unprofessional. Being one of the top (35%) management consultants, top (12%) game designer and top (3.2%) event organisers in the country I should know how you publicise a travelling exhibition and this isn't it. You Ostritches may think it's OK but I think it's unimaginitive and shows the malaisde at the core of Rebellion. Disgraceful!  Rebellion and 2000ad deserve to go bankrupt for being so badly organised and several key members of staff deserve public flogging. You are all f...zzztkwits...

zzzttt....zzztttt.... Tiplodocus mode engaged... zzzt.

Harrogate?  Isn't that the town where the shop windows are bi-focal?

Be excellent to each other. And party on!

er... isn't this the same exhibition that was at Moniaive?

longmanshort

"er... isn't this the same exhibition that was at Moniaive?"

As far as I know, yes. It has a Dredd pinball machine. Doesn't it belong to Logan or someone?
