If I wanted to produce and maintain a website where would I need to start?

Depends.

Do you know HTML?
If not, or if you want to brush up, try www.wemonkey.com (hat sadly not included).

You could do worse than getting hold of a copy of Dreamweaver, which will practically build your site for you. (www.macromedia.com).

If you're after a web host, there's loads out there. I use Blueyonder, but that's 'cos I work for them & get it for free. They're pretty reliable though...

Want to register a domain name? I used 1&1 (www.1and1.com) for mine, and not had any trouble so far...

Go to one of the free sites like yahoo's geocities or lycos' tripod.  There are a million others too, such as freeservers, 150m etc..  Most have templates of various kinds that you can choose.  Just type in and upload the pictures you need.

If your site is very popular, you can then upgrade to a paid account for less than ?10 a month.  This will give you more bandwidth and space.  Should you wish to design a larger or complicated site, either use a program such as FrontPage or DreamWeaver (again there's quite a few but most cost to upgrade from trial versions) and learn what to do.  Failing that, pay someone to design it for you (I hear SuperHeroStore Design offer the complete package with very competitive rates ! - end of plug).

Noooooo! Not Geocities! Pop-up hell! Same goes for tripod.

Which ISP are you with? Most of them offer some form of free webspace, and not all of them fill it up with banners & pop-ups.

I started out using this...they help you make you site in easy steps. If you don't know any html it's a good place to start building straight away.

It's fairly restrictive as to what you can actually do, but if you're a complete beginner that shouldn't cause any problems.
You get no popups or adverts, except for the Matmice logo inobtrusively at the bottom of the page.
