This arrived in an e-mail from "starwars.com" this morning:

"The most requested films for the DVD format will finally become a reality this September as Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox present the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Trilogy for the ultimate home entertainment format. The four-disc collection will be released on September 21 in the U.S. and Canada, with international release dates following closely."

This is great news as far as I'm concerned but what extras will the DVD's include? Will we see a director's cut of the director's cut?? There's not that much footage left which would add anything to "A New Hope", just a few odds and ends. Still, it's a must-have set.

God...
Why do I think my childhood memries are going to take ANOTHER pounding?

Borrowed a mates VHS copies of the ORIGINAL trilogy before new sfx and in process of copying to PC and making into DVD's.

I'd heard that the box set is going to be along the lines of the Indiana Jones one.

PVS - I agree, LOTR is the new star wars trilogy.

I'd only buy the DVD if it included the option to play the original theatrical version as well as the directors cut, as the Alien Quadrilogy did. But knowing Lucas' megalomania as far as his films are concerned, I'm sure the box set will just be an 8 hour advert for Industrial light and magic. The man cannot direct.

"Star Wars is dead."

Just out of fashion Paul, not dead. Never been a follower of fashion myself, my wife will testify to that!! But Star Wars is still one of THE most identifyable icons of the twentieth century and as such it will never die.

Presumably these are the "redone" versions and not the superior original cuts?

Mr D

No no, it's definitely dead. After episode I, II, the touched up versions, the possible new cuts in this, and the fact the prat is going to change the originals AGAIN to fit in properly with I and II, it is most definitely dead. Hunt down a copy of the ORIGINAL 3 films and guard them with your life!!

George Lucas couldnt direct his way out of a white room with a red door marked 'EXIT'.

He should have passed the reigns for episodes 1, 2 and 3.
He also should have passed the scriptwriting job over as well...

Star Wars is not only dead, but spinning in its grave!

The Monarch

Makes me think of that south park episode where Lucas and spielberg ends up trying to do a "new" version of raiders of the lost ark

Mr D

I love that one... And the sub plot where they organise a rally and offer a 'Free Hat' to try and get people to come, but everyone who turns up wants to Free Hat Macormick - a baby murderer.... So they're working at crossed purposes the entire film...

The boys succeed in the cool Raiders homage scene with the new cut of Indie, and the rest of them somehow manage to free this blatently guilty swine, who says 'Thank you all, and.... Could I get a baby real quick?'

Long pause.

'Give that man a baby!'

Ok, I'll shut up now!!

Dunk!

You can probably relate to how sad this makes me, but Star Wars is dead.

My friend recently used his production suite to put the original VHS versions onto DVD for me and these will be my treasured copies.

Unless - pretty please with sugar on top - George is releasing the originals?

I live in (a new) Hope.

I dunno, the Special Editions aren't that bad.

The Greedo shooting first scene sucks donkeys, admittedly (although there are rumours that will be change as Mr. Lucas 'admitted' it was an 'editing error') and there's too much Tatooine fluff in ANH.

But Empire is greatly improved by the Special Editions I think, cloud city looks a whole lot nicer.

And Jedi is improved too, less tacky 80's pop in the dance scene and less cutesy ewok music at the end too. Although Jedi's still a fairly crap film overall.

I thought the new special effects looked pretty dated when I saw the revamped Star Wars in the '90s, so I've no idea how they look now. (Mind you, maybe that's why the effects for 1 and 2 were so abysmal - to not make the "earlier" films look newer than the4, 5 and 6.)

I think he'd be better off doing a 7-disc set a la Alien/s (two versions of each film, one disc of extras), thereby satisfying the entire audience, and getting more money, too.

Mind you, I'm not all that fussed anyway - I never quite saw the rampant attraction to these films. I mean, they're all right, but not all that great, once the misty-eyed nostalgia is taken into account.
