Trout

On this silly message board, we have many in-jokes and we're proud of them!

However, we wish as many people as possible to understand them, and join in.

This is a public service brought to you by your mighty mutant monarch, who calls on all boarders to contribute.*

This thread will henceforth (until it's dragged into a discussion about biscuits or something) be a helpful reference point for anyone who's new.

Please include a short explanation of in-jokes here.

I shall begin.

Monkey in a hat

First appeared in the Darkie's Mob reprints in the Meg.

Discussion on this board quickly established that, due to the genius of the superfluous appearance of said behatted simian, the strip was greatly enhanced, for no discernible reason.

By a tiny logical step, it became obvious that any and all works of art in human history can be improved by the addition of a monkey in a hat.

Our collective devotion to millinery monkeys on this site has now extended to giving the little fella his own profile page, and pestering artists for monkey-in-hat sketches at various conventions, much to their disgust.

Time for more explanations, boarders. Add them here!

Likely candidates might include Liberal Stalinism, the bizarre Eyebrows/Longman ongoing battle and the phrase, "I'm there!"

- And all hail the King!

* It has not escaped your leader's notice that this entire post qualifies for an explanation of its own.
This is irony in action. :-)

not in favour of in-jokes, bit cliquey really and i hate that

have my whole life being a bit of a non conformist really, if i rememer rightly i think the artist put it in as a joke (its a bit like an easter egg in a modern computer game) - i gave it a good thumbs up out of respect to the artist and a bygone age

Mr D

Well thats a bit silly... How can you help but have in-jokes be created when a group of friends talk...??

test 4 echo

can an informed boarder advise on when/why to use the term " BWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHAAAAAAAA " or what ever it is and the origins of said term?

Devons Daddy

there are no cliques on this board, in a negative form.
many people here find others they enjoy to interact with.but never to the exclusion of others.

the one who cannot be named.
a very negative former and now banned member of the board,he flooded the place with nonsense, his own ramblings and insulted many creators and boarders at every turn.
if you turn up. say you like cats, and then go to insult others. you may get labelled as being S***o
for the good of the board he had to be asked to leave,
the only member ever to been forced to so.

Dunk!

Please don?t explain all the in-jokes and references.

The appearance of these on any thread informs the initiated reader that the thread?s main topic is over and no On-topic replies are warranted.

It?s vital service offered by the older boarders.
"Trust we"

Smiley

BWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHAAAAAAAA

Supervillain style guffaw of triumph, spoofed and popularised IIRC by Booster and Beetle of the Justice League during mutual bouts of one-upmanship.

IM THERE

i may be wrong but i think this was first noted as being an Andy Diggle catch phrase by one our finest artists. Jock,
likely a socail reference,i dont think andy diggle himself posted that phrase very often.but it has sort of been assocaited with him since that post by Jock.

HRH trout was called troutman then changed his title in effort to get others to do the same to see what they would call themselves.
it failed in that sense. but a fun im with the king. or off with his head debate began. with
HRH Trout handing out titles to the gathered here.
im head of catering in the kingddomm of trout and unofficail greeter,
others also where handed impressive titles.

ALL HAIL THE KING.

"the bizarre Eyebrows/Longman ongoing battle"

...can be explained in 3 words: repressed sexual tension. Can't you just feel the air in the chatroom sizzle when they're both in there? :P

Of course, Monkey-in-a-hat is by no means a 2000adonline-only in-joke, but something that everyone can enjoy.
The very fact that the popularity on this board for the joke grew from a re-print really shows just how long people have been appreciating monkeys in hats.

NB. The Fez, while technically being a hat, does not count for monkey-in-a-hat purposes - it's just too common, it's like getting excited about a dog in a collar, which is not a patch on a dog in a bomber-jacket.
Better set your phaser to stun.

And that's 'older' and not 'senior' boarders, I hasten to point out.  There's no such thing as a senior boarder- just some people who've been here longer than others.

I'd like to explain the French joke- but it's Gary's and he gets cross ;)

RELIGION.  Every time a new religion thread is started, it ends in tears.  Less of an 'in joke' and more of dire warning.  Don't go there...
Pffft...

And Peter is simply a twat, of course! :p

Yes, from the outside looking in, me and Molcher don't like each other very much- but we're just having a laugh.  He's a decent bloke who is unnaturally tall and not as talented as I am*.

He's newly single as well, ladies...

My, how we laugh!  :)

*Unlike another boarder, for example, who I just think is a bit of c***.

sikus style dredd chin and eagle.

in truth he produced one less then great story for dredd recently, but he has up until been an artist of his own style, not afraid to push the limits of what is considered correct. two camps you either love it or hate it.
but since the recent meat monger art work.references to dredds uniform has been referenced to his work on this strip. in a negative way.

I'd be grateful if someone would explain Liberal Stalinism to me.

I don't know what it is, although I automatically disapprove of it, of course.
