As at least some of you may have heard, Angel's been cancelled by WB, although they were good enough to provide plenty of notice so the current (final) season can be wrapped up. What amazed me is that Whedon publicly stated that he never saw this coming.

Maybe myself and my other half are in the minority, but I thought the series jumped the shark in spectacular fashion in the second half of season 4: the premise was terrible, the acting appalling, and the final episode, dire. (Well, many of them were dire, but luckily, it only cost us six quid to hire the tapes from our local library.)

Apparently, Whedon's been tossed a bone in the shape of one-off specials, although there's no confirmation whether any will happen.

Can't say i'm massively upset by that news. Mind you, i would like to know how they managed to work Spike in after he clearly spontaneously combusted?

I always thought it was dull toss from the beginning.  Angel was just there to take his shirt off and look pretty in Buffy.  In his own series he was just a mixture of harmless lovable buffoon, tough guy and occasionally bad boy.

The whole Buffy/Angel thing has been dragged out way to far now.  It probably would have been finished earlier if Firefly hadn't corked it.

Oh and I hope in the last episode he's buggered by sea demons.

Quirkafleeg

I could never get into Angel as it was buggered about so much by Channel 4...

Mr C

Never liked Angel, Buffy was a tongue in cheek show, Angel was more serious and dealt with issues and it was all dark and moody with a scraping violin soundtrack and actors who wore black.
Hard to be serious when you have a load of blokes running around in crap rubber masks and a main character who looks like he's gobbled one too many balck puddings.

Dunk!

I'm sorry to hear Angel has been cancelled.

One less watchable genre show in a TV schedule of unmitigated shite!

Oddboy

Hear hear Tulkas.

It's a great shame, as it's one of the only current TV shows I actively *try* to watch, and the *only* one I'd video if I was going to miss it.
Mind you, my video's sh*te so I might as well not bother, as it doesn't seem to record sound very well any more.
Better set your phaser to stun.

Don't know if this will get a response 'cos it's probably harder to think of any, but a few have stuck in my mind.

The first Kill Bill trailer (...Proudly presents the 4th film from Quentin...etc) really sold that movie to me - though i was very underwhelmed by the actual film but the trailer had got me to part with my cash.

Another is the original Spiderman trailer; the Twin Towers one. Now i wanted to see Spiderman but after that trailer i REALLY wanted to see Spiderman.

Anyone got any others? Especially if the film they promoted wasn't much cop 'cos that shows a good trailer.

I'm with Odds and Tulkas on this one-I haven't watched any of the current series yet,but have immensley enjoyed previous series.Me fave was 2 I think so far...

Shame.I think it *did* have a lot of good stuff an a bit of crap thrown in like Buffy, but it was at least willing to take some risks...

To tell the truth, you can all get screwed.

I agree with that: sure, this wasn't the best thing ever, but it was solid, dependable television. Like Buffy, there was plenty of filler (and, sadly, like Buffy, it all went horribly wrong once most of the decent writers jumped ship and Whedon lost interest). But, on the whole, it was very watchable fantasy stuff. (And, quite frankly, I reckon Angel took itself considerably *less* seriously than Buffy, seasons 5 through 7.)

FWIW, I thought the first and second seasons were good stuff, although the last few episodes of the latter were embarrassingly bad (shark jump #1). However, it did manage to get on track for season 3. Season 4 started really well, but just turned to total s?? in the second half (rather like Buffy, season 7); oddly, die-hard fans cite both as the best of each creation - maybe they just have short memories.

Hmm that's what two recent flops Wheddon's had...oh but I'm sure he'll get 300,000 when he launches Astonishing X-Men.

I'll miss it.  It's one I've watched from the beginning.  Didn't think they needed .....Ahh almost went into spoilers then...

Like Tulkas and Odds said, one less decent programme to watch come the Winter Schedules.

Would it be impolitic for me to dance around & wave my hands in the air at this news?

Generally Contrary

I used to watch this (wasn't it on Channel 4 on Sunday nights) and did enjoy the first series or so, but then kind of drifted away.

But then, don't take that as a mark of my opinion of it quality, I have a short attention sp...
