removal of threads

Due to something written in a recent thread that was offensive to another boarder the thread was removed at that boarders request.  Now apart from these comments the thread was a bit of a laugh so it was a shame to see it removed.  I would have preferred to have seen the offensive comments removed and the thread allowed to continue; as it seems that once the thread has been removed it is removed forever (I think this is what Wake was saying).

What do other people think?  Is it possible to do this (and if so is it workable)?

Nah - Removal of threads acts as a very occasional reminder of Wake's god-like powers.  When your god is displeased, it's better expressed through thunderstorms than occasional light showers, if you see what i mean.

More seriously, unpleasantness leads to unpleasantness, so just deleting the offending comment would be unlikely to stem a war.  Quicker & simpler just to delete the thread and kill the problem.

I wouldn't say this is true on every board or in every circumstance, since it could lead to conformity etc, but Wake has proved himself time & time again to be the soul of balanced good sense, so I trust him.  And he's only deleted 4 or so threads in the last 9 months that I can think of (at least one of which was mine).

WoD

I know that it's not something that Wake does 'willy-nilly' thankfully.  Our God is a thoughtful and un-rash God...(now the cream has had chance to work)...

Wake

Deleting or censoring a single comment in a thread would be inappropriate since it would still leave peoples reactions to that comment. The only alternative to a full deletion is to delete the offensive comment itself and everything in the thread posted more recently than that.

That would make sense to me Wake (it's what I was thinking, but did not get across).

Is it right that once you've removed a thread it is gone forever to the mecha-thread-quake never to be seen again?

Correct - though Will Logan might have an email copy of it.

Hmm..I must have missed that thread?..what was it..There hasnt been a contentious thread for at least a fortnight to my knowledge?

Wake

The thread I removed was about starting a new religeon, IIRC. However, the reason it was removed is not a suitable topic for the board.

Empty my deleted mail box every couple of months or so, there's around 10,000 deleted mails in it at the mo, so unless someone told me exactly what post they were after It could take a while.
