Books & Comics / Save Event Horizon!
12 April, 2006, 07:34:09 PM
According to Lying in the Gutters, fine publication Event Horizon is in a spot of bother due to a lack of pre-orders.

It's definitely worth your pennies, if only for the 2000AD alumni Liam Sharp has managed to include such as Ashley Wood, Glenn Fabry and Simon Bisley. It also includes up-and-comers such as Winter Special artist Kev Crossley (who, funnily enough, has also contributed to the next issue of The End is Nigh...)

Think of it as a British version of Heavy Metal, without the adverts for porn ... sadly.

The article:

Event Horizon" Vol. 3 is in trouble. Too few preorders are giving Mam Tor cash flow problems, and the book may not be published.

The only way for this volume to see print is for fans and retailers to order copies now. Right now. This week.

"Event Horizon" is the Liam Sharp ("Event Horizon") graphic anthology in the style of "Heavy Metal," but with far more of a British flavour. It boasts contributors including Sharp himself, Ashley Wood, Steve Niles, Glenn Fabry, Simon Bisley and, well, me. Their Web site is here. And here are a few of preview pages from Volume 3 from "Chase Variant," written by me, illustrated fully by Bagwell.

If you're a retailer, check your order and see if it justifies adding a few more copies of issue #3. The code is MAR063302. The code for Vol 2 is SEPT053014.

If you're a reader, tell your retailer you want a copy of Vol. 3 this week. Give him the code if necessary.

If you don't, Vol. 3 of "Event Horizon" goes away. And it's far too fine an experimental adventure into graphic storytelling to allow that.http://images.comicbookresources.com/litg/eventhorizon03_sm.jpg">

I know there are one or two public sector types on here, so I though I'd ask - who's walking out on Tuesday?! I'll be lending moral support to the picket lines from the comfort of my bed ...

Books & Comics / We're all Doooooomed!
19 March, 2006, 01:59:21 AM
Picked up the first issue of the horror anthology today and it's pretty good. Artwork by Ashley Wood, with some nicely put together tales of terror and depravity. Comes recommended from the Molchetron ...

Plus, it has the suitable parody of the EC comics hosts, but crossed with Elvria - MS DOOMED!!!

Prog / Prog 1475 - at long bloody last!
13 February, 2006, 03:48:47 PM
Wow, after three years of posting on this board (as of this month!) I actually start a review thread! Thank god I missed my first bus ...

All good stuff - real nice Dredd tale by Edington and D'Israeli. Slaine finally grinds to a halt. Ten-Seconders is actually quite good. And this was the first episode of Synnamon that I was actually disappointed in.

Oh, and Gary's Pitchfest winning Future Shock finally sees print - with a certain familiar face appearing ;-)

General / The time has come ...
02 February, 2006, 09:15:50 PM
After years defending them against pedantic parents, tiresome girlfriends and jealous friends, I'm actually thinking of disposing of my boxes and boxes of back progs.

Basically, I never read them anymore. But they sit under my bed, and in my wardrobe, and under my computer, and under my TV and my drawing board, and on several shelves downstairs ... so since I'll be moving soon, I figured now was the time.

However, while the more recent progs are well worth keeping and reading, the bulk of my collection spans from 1991 to 1997 - hardly a great vintage by anyone's standards. There are also far too many to catalogue, they would be too deliver to anywhere outside Leeds, and all of my friends either don't want them or already have them.

So I'm left with a dilemma - what do I do with them?

Give them to a charity shop?
Burn them?
Dump them on a railway siding, to be found by the lads looking for old copies of Razzle?
Use them as wrapping paper?

I really can't decide ...

My housemate recently picked up the box-set DVD of the new Battlestar Galactica.

I must say, Sky managed to completely botch the advertising of this when it first started - both I and my mate saw the adverts at the time and decided not to watch because it looked really crap.

Oh how wrong we could be ...

Lovely, well-thought out, gritty sci-fi that does take liberties sometimes and can occasionally be cliched but doesn't shy away from making political points (without JMS in sight!) and some great performances.

Watched last night's new episode and it ACTUALLY GETS BETTER!!!

Help! / The End is Nigh needs your help!
17 January, 2006, 09:11:40 PM
Hi

I know EiN is pretty much all I go on about these days (heh, it's practically a second job) but I'd like to make a call for more contributors - issue three is due out in May ... so if anyone would like to join the The End is Nigh party then please join up!!

We're specifically looking for ideas for comedy or silly features for the next issue - the theme is 'Keep Watching the Skies!' which covers asteroids, black holes, solar flares and all general space/sky stuff. I'm open to any ideas - the weirder and unique the better.

There's only one rule - IT HAS TO BE APOCALYPTIC!

So if you have any ideas, please don't hesitate to join the End is Nigh Yahoo newsgroup and post them there (rather than splattering them across the thread!) or e-mail me privately!

All ideas considered!!!

Cheers

Mike

Mr Blair continues the slow but inevitable move towards Judges on our streets!

Traditional justice methods were too cumbersome and too remote from reality, he said.

He said "spitting at an old lady" in the street was a crime but the person doing it was not prosecuted because it took so many man hours and only resulted in a fine.

"To get on top of 21st century crime we need to accept that what works in practice, in reality on the streets, is a measure of summary powers with right of appeal alongside the traditional court processes," he argued.

Help! / Techi help needed: Wireless broadband on my iBook
30 December, 2005, 09:36:54 PM
Random post-Christmas techno-phobic question:

Some would say foolishly, I bought myself a belated Christmas present of a second-hand iBook G4 and an Airport wireless card.

The intention, foolishly, was to utilise my girlfriend's wireless broadband, which she has with Wanadoo.

But, according to the bastards, they don't support Apple Macs on their wireless broadband.

So I'm stuck.

Am I going to have to get my better half to switch broadband providers or is there some other way to access the Wanadoo wireless without making it part of the same network (it and all networks within signal range are password protected)??

Techi help would be greatly appreciated.

Er ... in quite possibly the most surreal thing I've heard this year, the late Alistair Letters from America Cooke's bones were allegedly surgically removed and sold to a company supplying parts for use in dental implants and orthopaedic procedures.

The US attorney general's office is investigating an "elaborate ring involving funeral directors, surgeons and entrepreneurs".

My god, it's like a Dredd one-parter come to life!!!

Just discovered there's a Mrs Frontal-Gay who works here, plus a Richard Stiff ...

And I used to work with a guy called Wayne Ankers. No, really - he's a journalist, works in Manchester now. Perversely proud of his name as well. When his name first appeared in the Rochdale Observer, some woman rang up to complain that our "joke" was "in poor taste" ...

Any bizarrely named people where you work (real examples only!)

Did we know this already?

'Watchmen' on duty at Warner Bros.

"Watchmen," the seminal DC Comics limited series created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, has found a home at Warner Bros. Pictures. The project has landed at the studio with original producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin -- but not with screenwriter David Hayter and director Paul Greengrass, who were with the project when it was let go from Paramount in June. The development of the movie has turned out to be almost as epic as the story the comic tells. Hollywood had for years been trying to bring the 1986 comic book series to the big screen. Joel Silver brought the project, which remains the only wholly owned DC Comics property to have ever left the fold, to Larry Gordon when the latter was based at Fox, where Terry Gilliam was developing a Sam Hamm-penned script back in 1989. "Watchmen" first landed at a studio in 2001, when it was set up at Universal with Hayter on board to adapt and Gordon, who holds the rights, producing.
