Peter Wolf, you are a character from Twin Peaks.

Dave Thomson, you are one from Spinal Tap, or possibly a much better replacement for Robin of Sherwood than Jason Connery was.

Dark Jimbo, you are Murray from Flight of the Conchords.

Vzzbx, you are a hard bastard and I wouldn't fuck with you.

Heh. That was shot at Berkely Square, London at a photo shoot shortly before the Red Dwarf:Back To Earth Premier.

That photo was actually on the Dave web site, and there I was in the background.

Here's a clearer picture of me. (Still a bit fuzzy though.) Shame the hat isn't on straight, and I'm cuddling a sheet one of the RD fan club team passed me. Sigh.

These are a bit over a year old, so I haven't changed all that much.

House of Usher & Peter Wolf both look like a well known actors.

They would be Steve Buscemi & a younger John C Reily, but only from that angle I guess.

You might completely different inanother photo.

Wills looks like a former aquaintances of mine, though I know he's not the same person.

He just looks similer.

Myself, I was thinking using a collage of photos of me taken through out the last twenty years where I certainly did look alot better fifteen years ago than I look now.

But for now, lets just make do with the bust of my avatar and one of those Second Life pictures of another avatar of mine that does look remarkably alot like me.

This one is my EBAY Avatar.....

Now In this closer up picture, I would be lying if i said this looks exactly like me, because I think I look sort of cool here and I think thats just a trick of the software that I used to create my avatar.

Stilll considering wether to use a real life photo of myself, as it's breaking a unwritten law of the convenant of internet users to do this I'm afraid.

That's not so much a correction as a preference for a scary, beardy Canadian presenter who looks like Satan over an annoyingly upbeat Scottish presenter.

Truth be told my recollections of that show are rather fuzzy. I wasn't sure of the guy's name and the first google result told me that twas Ian Lauchlan, but when you mentioned Yoffy and after a quick image search I realised that the beardy guy was also the one I preffered. Plus I have to get in with the canadians so I best support him.

Alrighty, as I dug through some old photos to change my avatar (http://www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,30423.msg552595.html#msg552595) (for a reason I forget), you might as well have the piccies:

The full version of the avatar, from when I was... 2 or 3 perhaps? Before The Horror anyway:

Its like the Virgin Mary turning up on a biscuit or Mother Theresa in a bun - my friend reckoned the Swiss Cheese Plant leaf looked like me and so drew it (and I suspect made it look more like me). Although to be fair I was fairly baffled by it initially, but then my friend who did it is fairly baffling. Somewhere round here I have "Tapeworm in Pizza Cheese" which was to commemorate my throwing up after eating a pizza (I forget why or where but I think booze was involved).

I have a horrible suspicion it is just a thick skull,* for me anyway - I'm sure you have a big old bucket of brains sloshing round your skullbox.

* I had to take two friends to the hospital after they get a kicking so got a good old look at the insides of their heads (in X-rays) and the chap with the larger head had a skull like an ox (without the horns obviously). It impressed the doctors, which is always a sign you're pushing the envelope on human variability, and despite taking the brunt of the beating they let him go the same night.

Hmmm...that probably holds up to be honest...

I've never been knocked out in my life despite various scrapes and as a kid I fell off the cliffs behind my house...not once but twice...120 feet the first and about 50 feet the next whilst remaining completely conscious! Ok granted a few broken bones but my skull was fine  ;)

Perhaps I need to split this off to form the first post in a thread along the lines of "Disturbing photos of yourself" as I can't much see that fitting "What do you look like?" unless it is short for "What do you look like moments before you disembowel me and use my hollowed out torso as a toilet?"

The image button (http://2000adonline.com/forum/Themes/default/images/bbc/img.gif) gives you the necessary code, just stick the link between them.

If you use something like Photobucket or tinypic (the latter being handy for quick and dirty uploads because you don't have to login) then they will give you the required code and link together.

The danger is linking to images not on image hosting sites, as this hotlinking is frowned upon (as you are stealing bandwidth) and quite a few people block this so you might see it (because it is in your brower's cache), but everyone else won't be able to.

So reading this from the start for the very first time I have the following conclusions:

1. 1/2 of you are baldies
2. 1/2 of you are long haired hippies
3. Some of the birds are quite fit
4. There's too much male flesh on show
5. There's not enough female flash on show (we need a female members in underwear thread!)
6. All of the above may not actually be correct
7. Peter Wolf's pic is my fav, straight out of Silence of the Lambs

Plus if you haven't been in the prog / meg / special / annual etc, you can't exist, obviously.

I went through a midlife crisis couple of years ago vzbx, and I went around with that same bemused though calm expression you are exhibiting in those pics, all day long and for weeks on end.  ;)

It still comes and goes evey once in a while, and I find myself at the bottom of the garden tranquilly and serenely watching the fish swim about in the pond; or just look at the stars. It helps.

In some cultures, this is called a mid-life opportunity as it marks the time when people attain a maturity that allows them to realise that the world is not as they imagined as a youth. I like opportunities better than crises!

Ah philosophy, what a sweet agony you are. Area - freewill.

This is hard for you to justify if you believe in science - the big bang theory, inductive principles... In fact the whole theory of laws of cause and effect! If every action has a reaction, our lives could just be one long series of causes and effects.

If you believe in christian religious principles (don't get me too going on this btw cos ill upset people with rational argument) then some kind of fate must exist. You cannot have an all knowing god and have free will - this is self contradictory.

The other solution to examine is that we are like a flowing river. Free, but only within the confines of our banks. Of course this explanation if wrought with problems as it attempts to reconcile 2 directly opposing ideas but hey, its the least depressing option :) x

Then there's the Many Worlds Theory where everything that can happen does happen. Every moment of our lives branches off into any of infinite possibilities - like will I even write this post? Will there be a spilling mistook in it? Which spooling mistske will I make? It's like you're driving a car on a road with infinite branches and turnings and you can choose whichever path you like so long as you stay on the road in this Hellishly complex one-way system. But at every branch or turning you split in two and follow both or all three or however many infinite possibilities there might be. That way you get to exercise free-will and be constrained by a sort of fate at the same time. At any one time there are infinite yous, all branching back in time to turning points when you become the same you, quite separate from the different  yous that are going to branch off from the you at this very moment. I guess this means that you are only you for this present moment, a moment ago you were another you and a moment from now you will be another you again.

Does anyone have an aspirin?

science is belief system as it requires you to believe things beyond your own empirical and rationality - a certain amount is taking other peoples word for things - this is an appeal to authority - this is a fallacy - fallacies are not valid argument forms. Of course the difference is that it is much easier to turn scientific beliefs into valid knowledge.

Yes, as I said, I not wish to upset anyone with rational arguments, but yes god cannot know the choices one makes AND not know. My favourite favourite example is from the bible itself. Jesus, starving, comes across a fig tree but alas, it is winter.  Despite knowing that it is not natures way for the fig tree to produce fruit during winter, in anger Jesus smites the fig tree so that it may never again bear fruit. That's just says it all dunnit ;)

Not very comfortable viewing anyway here's a link explaining his seminal work. Not very comfortable at all. Geography is destiny according to him.

No. Science is not set of a beliefs, it is simply a method of describing and approaching a problem. You may will be able to build a belief system around certain scientific discoveries or theories (particularly if you ignore the whole inherently self-corrective impetus of the method) and you could possibly argue that, as none of us ever really starts from first principles in our exploration of the physical world, we are still taking some things on faith but that's about as far as it goes.

Your mouth is full of wrong. The appeal to authority is a fallacy employed by the popular press to cover science stories. They use phrases such as 'Scientists have said...' or 'research has shown...' and '...according to Professor Smarty Pants who is the expert the field of something esoteric and complicatey.'.

I'm not saying these scientists don't have valid opinions, but they're just that. Opinions. And it doesn't matter what 'research has shown' if you don't explain what the research was, how it was carried out and all that other technical stuff the popular press never bothers with because they're also appealing to emotion, and as we all know, hand-wringing about health/technological/cultural/religious implications is more interesting than dry statistics and boring methodologies.*

The public at large is shockingly mis-informed about science, and that is because the public accepts the appeals to both authority and emotion presented to them by the press. In proper, valid comprehensive scientific theories, the evidence, the data, the experimental methods used to obtain both of these, are the arguements, not the conclusions of the people that try and interpret them.

What's the motto of the Royal Society?

You know them, they're those people that put on cracking science lectures for kids every Christmas.

Their Motto is:

Nullius in verba

Take nobody's word for it

Certainly didn't intend to propose it as a rebuttal of Christianity, that's not my place - only insofar as it's one of the things that make my personal beliefs incompatible with any kind of theism.

I would note (and then I really will shut up about this) that the same logic doesn't apply 'when God is removed from the equation'.  Everyone from Gödel to Schrodinger to Ruelle has made the point that 'everything' genuinely cannot be known (unless you introduce an omniscient being into the equation, presumably sitting outside the normal system of the universe), and thus there's no way of precisely extrapolating the future from the present moment: thus, as a vision of Kyle Reese would have it, no fate.

By the way, I feel a worrying urge to kiss pops1983 after that post.

Nullius in verba

Take nobody's word for it

An admirable ideal - but often sadly lacking, especially when politics gets involved. Look at the 'global warming' fiasco. The political view was that the science was done and dusted - irrefutable. The media and politicians pushed the "all scientists agree" line when all scientists didn't, and still don't, agree. Those who questioned data and methods or those who produced contradictory data were and still are sidelined and even ridiculed. This is not the fault of science or the scientific method, it is the fault of politics and corporate interests interfering to push an agenda.

The politicos and media would have us believe that it's all understood and sorted because science tells us so. Relying on science, the leaders know what to do. They have a plan. No need for us to worry. Everyone got swept up in this. The facts are that we don't fully understand climate change and we don't fully understand what's actually driving it - and, if it is us, we don't understand if the process can be stopped, how it can be stopped or even if it should be stopped. We have some ideas, sure - but we don't know. To my mind, that simple statement 'we don't know' is at the heart of science and drives it to find things that we can and do know. In this respect, I think, science and religion are at least comparable.

I love science, I really do, but I dislike the politicisation of it and the ostracism of those scientists who disagree or find inconvenient truths. I'm not saying that science should accept every crackpot theory that comes along, but I think it needs to cast a wider net and shake the politics from its heels. Find stuff we can use, dammit! That's what science is for, isn't it?

Mind you, when it comes to protracted rants from me, Nullius in verba.

I do a study that proves Y is X and tell you about it. You have no personal experience of Y or X other than this. Do you now know about X and Y? Well no. But you can you a certain amount of rational thinking to conclude that Y is probably X. Is 'probably' a pure truth? Again not really. But you can go test/analyse these things yourself to gain a 'purer' truth x

Has this study of yours been peer reviewed and published in a recognised scientific journal?
Because if it hasn't you can forget about it.
You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the scientific process works - but hey! You're able to throw in a few big words, so that's okay...

Yes darlin exactly! Maybe there is a link between banana consumption and heroin addiction, but first you'd need to gather evidence from biologists, psychologists, chemists, historians etc., etc. If that's done, fine - but at the moment all the scientific evidence points to the likelihood that cannabis is more effective as a gateway drug than bananas.

I think that science doesn't know everything - as I'm sure it would be the first to admit - but what it does know, it knows with relative certainty. Critics of science, I think, often forget this and think that science should not only know everything but understand it.

Science doesn't give us understanding and neither does faith - these two things give us the tools and the facilities to find whichever understanding we're looking for. There's a great line in B5 that I'll never forget; "Faith and reason are the shoes on your feet, you can get further with both than just one."

its just the problem with any kind of reasearch, testing, statistics, experiments, analysis etc is that they all contain a certain amount of bias. Anything from small things like the wording in a questionaire or a tester tone of voice all the way to the out right fact that if the researchers can't prove the things they want they lose their jobs. You can't even say that the sun will 100% rise tomorrow, only that its 99.99999999999999999....9% going to rise. I'm in no way some crazy creationist or anything in a war on science, just so long as people think long and hard about things before accepting them as truth. Actually this is also allowed for in the scientific method, as results of an experiment are understood to be contingent on assumptions.

Yes you can.
In fact, I will do it now - the sun will rise tomorrow.

By the way, it was hilarious when you tried to patronise me earlier. And strange when you make an absolute statement we have to accept it as fact, but we can't do that with a scientific study. Very odd, that... almost like you have no idea or something...

That'll be how results are reported in the news media, or how you read it of course. There's plenty of examples of one aspect of a paper that is seized upon by some journalists and reported in isolation, sometimes well after publication, either through genuine ignorance or because it's a bit more exciting than a graph or something. If the feature causes a great big fuss, I find there's a lack of follow up reporting when the exciting or controversial point is revised, superceded or even 'debunked' by further work.

Well, strictly speaking pure science isn't about stuff we can use - possible applications based on it i.e. technology is about what we can use. What use is the high end of physics for example, to us now? Maybe in the future, useful technologies may be developed from the understanding, but maybe not. It's just stuff about things.

I believe that IBM are currently working on high spec computers using Quantum theory, that will allow electrons to 'teleport' from one place to another.  Basically you could be using below level 4 comms at speeds higher than light speed, transfering information without the need of cables and wires.  I know we have wireless, but to transfer data any kind of distance we still need cabling.

Basically what Im saying is that High End Physics (or any other theoretical Science), may not have an immediate practical use but some of the theories and finds may have uses we might not immediately think of and yes that does involve a case of Sci Fi novels doing it first.

Now when we start talking about review and proof and experiments, please remember that it isnt one person who's reviewing a find but in essense the whole world.  If things dont add up, they will eventually be found out.... having said that there are a lot of things the scientific jury is still out on.  Due to our lack of understanding or lack of technology.

Yeah, that's what I'm getting at T'A'FKAS. What them crazies are doing now might not be fully understood for a long time, never mind ever finding a useful application. With regard IBM, my point would be they didn't develop the theories they're using  - yer actual science - and by the same token the people that did had no idea if it could be applied in that way.

No indeed, but we all use whats been discovered before taking it for granted even.
as Newton said "We are dwarves, standing on the shoulders of giants"

We build knowledge we never reset it as such, even when for example Einstien's theory of Relativity (or was it his special theory) blew away newtonian physics with regard to Gravity.  We still use Newton's theories and equations, not because they are exact.  But because the errors produced are so miniscule with a rather simple equation that moving to a much more complicated equation would introduce complexity when its simply not needed.

Quote"the bullshitter is faking things", but that "this does not necessarily mean he gets them wrong". While liars need to know the truth to better conceal it, bullshitters, interested solely in advancing their own agendas, have no use for the truth. Thus, Frankfurt claims, "...bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are"

Oh, I hope I didn't say that. I like thinking about stuff, so far as I'm able. I just meant you tend to have to focus down if you're gonna get anywhere/ through the day.

I whole-heartedly agree with the principles of science; clearly as a system it works. And if I didn't, well who cares, the process still carries on irregardless of my extremely uneducated opinion. My brother-in-law can cure cancer in a lab (or so he claims but it's his job and I've no good reason to doubt him). I'm surmising, as he's neither rich nor famous, that he's not the only one. I'm also assuming he didn't get to that stage from first principals on his own and I'm almost completely certain that he won't be the one to make the breakthrough of turning that formidable knowledge into a useful, street-ready treatment. But I'm thrilled that we clearly know more about cancer than we previously did. Or, at the very least, he does. And he got there on the basis of thousands of years of conjecture, argument, experimentation and grudging agreement. That's brilliant!

There's also shed-load of bullshit to do with funding, politics, rivalries, relationships and God knows* what else that goes with it. But that's seperate and has nothing to do with it or, I think, at least as far as the debate here goes.

I don't know about fate and truth, or what they have to do with science. In fact, thanks to six years of art education, I am now expertly qualified to not even know what art is.

Its not called Faith its called "Peer Review", which is based on the whole premise that we humans love to prove each other wrong.....  somethings published academics and industry scientists check the results and processes.  Confirm it or dont.  The rest is hokum.

Before you sit down in front of that TV or computer, maybe you should do some experiments to prove the existance of some electrons?  Or before you get on a bus or drive a car, do some of those momentum and engineering equations just to prove your going to be safe and I dread to think what your going to do before you get on a plane?

This again isnt faith, its proven time and time again.  You can see it happening all around you.  If everyone thought like this, we'd be reinventing the wheel each time a baby was born.  Just to prove to that child the wheel works, we'd never get beyond the stone age...

yesh! That's why I said use foundationalist principles to breeze past everything else - this is a philosophy joke as foundationalism is both incredibley flawed and the only real solution to any knowledge debates. A foundationalist belief would, for example, be 'past behaviour is the biggest indicator of future behaviour' - oprah winfrey. No matter how flawed inductive (the oprah quote is inductive reasoning) principles are, there is no other way to build up knowledge. This makes the whole subject of epistemology (the theory of knowledge) a bit of a waste of time. God bless you descartes. All I have done is bring up 'famous' arguments from this debate in joking forms. Not sure I'm fitting into this forum might go back to guest x

Too far, Richmond, too far!  As for Judo, you'd have thought a philosopher would be wary of the pitfalls of confusing the sceptical mindset with what is effectively solipsism.  ;)  Or to put it another way, you fit in here just fine, Judo.

While I agree that there are mathematic proofs and high-energy experiments that will be forever beyond most of us, there are simple inexpensive experiments and observations that anyone can carry out to verify many quite fundamental scientific results and theories, and I imagine many of us have done exactly that, either in school or at home.

A €5 laser pointer and a homemade diffraction grating made from an old CD is a good starting point for getting at the issues that underpin quantum theory. Observe the diffraction pattern, and you're part of a sequence of theory developed through verifiable experimentation that stretches from Newton and Huygens through Planck, Maxwell, deBroglie, Einstein and Heisenberg.  Bear in mind that if you carried out this experiment and it ever didn't produce the theorised pattern, you would be joining this lineup of the great and the good - that's (part of) the enticement that keeps science honest, the best way to make a name for yourself is to show how the most respected theories are wrong.

Anyway, once you've seen wave-particle duality in your own understairs cupboard you'll know why electron microscopy, transistors and even the laser pointer you're using to do the experiment works.  After that, how about some orbital mechanics with a €20 telescope, or even the shape of the Earth with a mountain hike?  Just stay away from trying experiments to disprove the First and/or Second Law of Thermodynamics.  Whole lives have been consumed.

Just out of curiosity, can anyone name me one thing useful that philosophy has ever contributed to the human race?
I mean, science has given us thing like drugs, powered flight, warm homes and clothing and computers.
Art has given us everything from Bob Dylan to the Mona Lisa.
Philosophy... someone help me out..?

Possibly a bit close to religion, which of course has given us death, destruction, pain, suffering and sectarianism. Maybe more like the implementation of philosophy has given us religion as a means of control and division, hence the above. Then again, science has given us all those things too. Art? Well, I've got records by Death and Destruction, I'm damn sure there's bands of the others, though sectarianism's a pretty poor band name.

I'm going to stop.

Too far, Richmond, too far!  As for Judo, you'd have thought a philosopher would be wary of the pitfalls of confusing the sceptical mindset with what is effectively solipsism.  ;)  Or to put it another way, you fit in here just fine, Judo.

Solipism!  If only.  I hope I avoided a personal attack, Im still getting used to this board from the old free for all.

Im rather protective of the ideals of science, I spent 5 years studying pure science before finding a job that allowed me to use scientific procedures as a way of fault finding.  Its what I do.  I dont really think of it beyond that.  Ive earned a decent living from it, in a way its almost Spock like!  Though you still cant beat that old gut feeling....

Schools of thought such as existentialism (if you're a depressed sod like me reading someone like Kierkergaard or Satre helps validate certain things immensely and prevents me from slipping too far into all-out self-loathing, well sometimes anyway) or objectivism (if you're a self-centred twat like Ayn Rand).

So swings and roundabouts really.

I learned a lot from Mindfulness, which is kind of Buddhism without the religion.  When I had to deal with death and anger...  It helped a bit, I guess most things are try and see.

Jurisprudence, or legal philosophy, is an important part of forming laws across the civilised world. It helps trainee lawyers to understand the principles behind all sorts of laws, and ideas like natural justice. I studied it as part of my law degree and it was very boring indeed.

Pardon my ignorance but isn't philosophy basically just 'thinking about stuff' and trying to make sense of our place in the world?

Aren't we all, in a way, philosophers?

Sorry, I'll crawl back to my fortress of un-educated flim-flam now.

It extends to the droids too - Colin "King of Men" MacNeil sports a fine goatee and Al Ewing proves that all comics writers with the name "Al" need large resplendent facial foliage.

Carlos has a moustache that not even cancer could eliminate, although I'm not sure if upper lip hair is OK.

You'll find a lot of characters resemble their creators as many of them use a mirror when drawing facial expressions. I've noticed Leigh Gallagher's and Fabry's characters have a similar effect.

Tordleback- yeah, ive lost about half a stone i reckon, if not more. And thanks to having nothing to wear other than one of my old clubbing shirts, apparently about ten years! Bonus. Though i wouldnt recommend the d&v diet to be honest, it's very unpleasant. But cheers!

You had the misfortune to be a bearded baldie (and therefore disgusting) posting in the middle of some tangent about what science if and isn't. I also didn't recognise it as a drumlin, a waste of all that training in Quaternary geology :( Weather looked nice though.

Yeah that was fun.

I have just realized I don't have any photos of myself from the past 3 years. Does this mean I'm a vampire? Because that would be embarassing. Apparently there was this thing called Twilight and all vampires are gay now?
Apparently people who clearly weren't the target audience read/watched it just to piss themselves off? And now they devote their time to slag something of that they don't like?

Ye'd have to ask my wee sister, I really don't understand the whole thing.

Sorry, I'm talking shite. Very sleep deprived. Here's me the morning after my sister's wedding reception, when I actually did get some sleep:

Everyone had wandered back to their rooms but I was unaccounted for. This is how they found me before breakfast. When I asked the Bar man why he just didn't wake me and chuck me out, he replied:

'Ach, well, I didn't want tee disturb ye. Ye looked comfortable enough. Same again?'

Now THAT's a good bar man.

There's a great line in B5 that I'll never forget; "Faith and reason are the shoes on your feet, you can get further with both than just one."

there is a link. i dont like bannanas and have never done heroin.

Doug was good. any comparison to bill hicks can only be a compliment surely - how dare you compare me to the beatles, i mean, FFS - but i wouldnt say that to his face, as yes, im sure he gets that a hella lotta. I like doug because he works with pretty much the hardest material ever and no micheal mcintyre bull but i do worry about him as hes obviously dealing with some very serious problems in his own way. im glad you gave him a sweety, did it have infinite jellys in it? did anyone cheer gary up for me?! x

I only truly discovered Doug recently, but he has quickly become an all time hero of mine. It's easy to group him in with comedians like Bill Hicks and George Carlin, because of somewhat similar opinions and a passion for what he talks about. For me, he is much more then this.
It was an absolute pleasure to meet him and have a quick chat to him, after he called me a proper cunt. Later on, as I was manning Zarjaz table, he made a point of coming over to me and saying hallo again and introducing me to his partner. Sometimes, meeting your heroes isn't always a bad thing.

He's no my hero or anything. not many heroes for me merely 'cool dudes', 'objects of lust' and, the highest honour I can bestow - 'Leg End'. Dougs a cool dude but I suspect in private life he may be a bit of a leg end x
