Title: Brass Sun US Format - Issue 1
Post by: Bat King on 16 April, 2014, 05:49:07 PM
Out 28th of May ($3.99 so around £2.99) Issue 1 of 6 begins with introducing the rolers of the small corner of the Orrery where Cadwallader and Wren live.

I've not re-read this at all so it was very interesting to revisit the beginning. If you haven't read it this mini-series will certainly help you understand the last series a little better.

Review from pdf so I can't be certain but if the same paperstock is used for this as was used for Underbelly it'll look excellent.

My review, spoiler free, is in the usual place. (http://judgetutorsemple.wordpress.com/2014/04/16/brass-sun/)

It isn't IDW. This is a Rebellion publication (or 2000AD) but in US Format.

It won't be on Comixology. It will be available digitally through the 2000 AD online webshop and the 2000 AD iPad app.

I much prefer Rebellion's strategy of reformatting material for the US market than IDW's. The centred artwork either being bordered by solid colours or blends is just gentler on the eye. I hope we see more titles from Rebellion for the US market, a semi-regular or mini-series based on the Dredd movie would be a natural.

First printing sold out already. (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/06/05/brass-sun-1-sells-out-of-4000-first-print-v-wars-2-sells-out-of-9500/)

Interesting strategic development from the House of Tharg, IMO, and a clever way to raise the brand identity.

(Also a really good comic.)

Cheers

"A second print of 1000 copies have also almost gone. Expect a third soon."

That's not too shabby for a property no-one's heard of, from a brand a lot of Americans won't be terribly familiar with. I'm sorely tempted myself, but money's tighter than it was and I'm waiting for the collection this winter instead. It'd be great if 2000 AD finally made it in terms of comics (rather than collections) in the US by using this model.

I've read a few of those, and one thing that is interesting is how many people are recognising the dense nature of the content. I imagine that'll come as a (nice) shock to quite a lot of US readers, used to comics just bibbling through 20ish pages without doing all that much.

Well that was fun. A great start to build on. I'm a little apprehensive though as I've heard that this is a story without an end planned. With such a tight opening, it'd be disappointing to see it become directionless over time.

I'd be pretty sure there is a planned end to Wren's (current) story - but with the numbers of worlds in the orrery the actual journey itself could take all sorts of interesting turns before we get there, depending on how things go on all fronts, creative, critical, financial and in-universe. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It's really heartening to see two titles (Ordinary & Brass Sun) doing so well, with both getting really good reviews and sales state side.

I really enjoyed reading them both, and in the case of Brass Sun, can't wait to see the 3rd season start soon.

I'll let you guys on a little secret; as most of you are aware I'm pretty new to 2000ad, having jumped on board from prog 1800 maybe two years back. A large part of the reason why I'm now a staunch fan of the Prog was to do with Brass Sun, because when I picked up the jumping on prog and flicked through the pages, two things caught my attention, one being Judge Dredd and the wonderful artwork by Chris Weston (on The Death of Dan-E Cannon), and the other strip wss Brass Sun which had just started.

As soon as I saw Culbard's artwork and the clockwork splash page I was drawn in, and have not looked back since. Hence my soft spot for the series. You could say I owe a lot to INJ Culbard and Ian Edginton!

Great to see this being received so well across the pond. Definitely one of the best things either man has done - which is really saying something!

Would love to see tooth do more comics like this, as an addendum to the prog.

I got this because I started subscribing to the Prog just as book 2 started and I wanted to see how the story started. Can anyone tell me whether this reprint run includes both books so far? If it does, when will it get to a point where I've already got the Progs? I ask as a digital buyer who therefore can't peek at the first page to check and doesn't want to blow £2.50 on stuff I've already got.

Does that mean that book one (which is all I need) will be in issues one and two of the reprints?

Arh yeah but the average US comic markets itself as 32 pages but there is normally only 20-22 pages of actual story, the rest is editorial and ads.

I mostly quoted my preview to show there weren't more than 30 pages of story per issue.

Page count breaks down as -
Story - 30
Ads -2 1 for digital comics principally the 2000AD iOs Ap & 1 for Dredd Files which shows lovely matching up spines (both come at breaks in pace)
Cover 0 (or 4 making it 36 pages)

Cover break down:
1 - front cover with 2000AD badge ident + Text Title in cog shape with credits
2 - inside front cover with extended credits &* copyright etc
3 - inside back cover with trailer for issue 2

Paper stock is superier, the cover card

The finish is excellent and really holds the colours perfect - episode titles & next prog comments are gone (obviously).

Go buy a paper copy everyone! Oh, mostly sold out...

Bit behind the curve on Issue 1 but I gave it some words for Down the Tubes there in my new 100% inoffensive 2000ad round-up thing - http://downthetubes.net/?p=15718

It's a beautiful volume - and I see from this thread there De Ville presumably gets a credit on the inner cover as the pdf I got was just cover n story. Works beautifully and as a tentative first step for Rebellion into American-format mini-series it's a bold statement - I really love Brass Sun and this really could hold its own against a lot of titles in the stores there I reckon. Lovely lovely lovely.

Title: Re: Brass Sun US Format - Issue 1

...really? I suppose that is the way some write it but I've literally never thought it was a thing - look how many times I write it like that on the article there... I've just always wrote it that way... and the FB page for the art competition :S Sheesh. Although to be fair ECTB2000ad and the Future Shock film both format it that way... hmmmmm seems it can be either or but you've blown my mind there...

Some also capitalize the AD but don't put a space in - blimey it's a minefield I never knew I was in!

Also - Sauchie cheers yes it's going to be fortnightly if all goes to plan - small press reviews one week, the round-up on the other!

Cheers, I hadn't found that. Looked through the 'comics' part of the shop, but it wasn't coming up.

However, I'm loathe to pay £2 postage on a £3 comic! After being spoiled by online shops offering "free" postage- which may obviously be included in the cover price- it just seems excessive. I'll wait to see if the usual outlets get it in. But thanks, anyway.

Finally got around to reading issue 1 (and 2 as it goes) and it reminds me just how glorious Brass Sun is. Have to say it reads even better in one (or two). The presentation is beautiful and even with the squished up pages it looks just beautiful. Oh and so much for ya money too.

If this isn't a hit in the US the comic Gods need to wipe out the entire nation in retribution.

Where are we after issue 2? Is that the end of series 1 or do I need to get the third in order to have the full picture? I've read series 2 in the prog, but there seems to be a gap in the story - the loss of the diary etc - that I'm not sure is deliberate or not.
