General / OCTOBER ART COMP - RESULTS THREAD
02 November, 2016, 12:52:50 AM
THIRD PLACE - MARK HIGGINS

SECOND PLACE - MIKE D

FIRST PLACE - ANDY LAMBERT

A slower month but what high quality we had - despite only a short time to vote we got a lot in and although Lambert had it in the bag with his hideous Drumpf Trump image MikeD's remarkable second place wasn't far off!

THARG'S CHOICE goes to BRIAN CORCORAN

...and like a golden light shooting from the Emerald Isle we have our first DROID'S CHOICE for months courtesy of Dreddworld king, 3D art lord and fandom king Mr Michael Carroll!!

Quote"It's VERY tough to pick just one for the Droid's Choice... so much talent on show here! Excellent work all around, I have to say. But after much deliberation, I've chosen "Mine's a MacMac" by Brian Corcoran. It's a spot-on rendition of GBH, one that wouldn't look out of place as a star-scan in the prog!"

Books & Comics / Interesting Comic Kickstarters
26 October, 2016, 02:27:33 PM
Alright chaps - Journal contributor and Prof Elemental comics writer Chris Mole and lettering supremo Ken Reynolds have both contacted me recently about helping them promote their Kickstarters so I thought WHAT BETTER EXCUSE to start a thread that handily collates the interesting comics KS that pop-up so frequently and sometimes finish and leave you going "OH I WISH I'D SUPPORTED THAT".

So Chris Mole's is called Brigantia

It's the first issue of a miniseries and is about a time travelling Romano-British goddess so I'm up for it - containing as it does time travel and Roman shit which I'm well into. Never mind the talent - Chris is a great and passionate writer, great at pacing and building worlds. Melissa Trender is new to me but the art and colours are stunning - and 2000 AD's very own Gronkgod Nigel Dobbyn is on letters. It's only a £6 pledge for a hard copy/PDF which is extraordinarily reasonable I think.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/538213076/brigantia-issue-1

The one by Ken Reynolds is called Sliced Quarterly

It's a collection of four issues of his Sliced Quarterly comic anthology - themed around the idea of experiment with comic narratives, it's extremely inventive stuff and contains some of the more fertile brains of the small press. One of the rewards is an astonishing digital mega bundle that contains TWENTY TWO indie comics for £8 which is pretty full on.

Film & TV / Han Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
22 October, 2016, 12:26:47 AM
...or whatever it's going to be called. Thought it was about time this had its own thread!

Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and written by father & son Jon & Lawrence Kasdan

Lord & Miller are best known for directing "21 & 22 Jump Street", "The Lego Movie" and "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs".
Lawrence Kasdan obviously wrote "Empire", "Jedi", "Force Awakens"," Raiders of the Lost Ark" as well as "The Bodyguard", "Dreamcatcher", ""Grand Canyon" and some other stuff
Jon Kasdan wrote and directed "In the Land of Women" and "The First Time".

Only confirmed cast so far is...

Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo who has been in Beautiful Creatures, Hail Ceasar, Stoker & Blue Jasmine only really

Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian - announced just a few hours ago Glover has made big waves on telly in Community and in his own show Atlanta. He was in The Martian also and may play a significant part in Spider-Man Homecoming.

Some good names - looking interesting!

As suggested by August & September winner Mark Higgins it's high time we celebrate the sillier side of 2000 AD past and present. Even at the core of some of the darkest worlds there tends to be an undeniable sliver of comedy but we want to focus on those stories that are almost entirely intended to be funny-

Ace Trucking Co, D.R. & Quinch, Hewligan's Haircut, Survival Geeks, Bec & Kawl, I Was a Teenage Tax Consultant (PROBABLY NOT SPACE GIRLS) as always Barney is your friend

However if you DO want to recreate a moment in an otherwise sensible universe that's made you laugh out loud (and it was likely intended to do so) I won't turn it away!

There will be a GN straight from the nerve centre for the winner of course, and one for Tharg's Choice - and there will also be a bonafide 2000 AD droid choosing their favourite entries (hopefully) - all entries will be viewable here, on our dedicated FB page, and also on the official 2000 AD Tumblr and Twitter!

Rules for the art comp are these:

- It must fit the theme.

- You can enter as many times as you like but bear in mind it will split your vote so it may not be worth it.

- All entries have to be constructed specifically for this competition - so nothing you've done for anything else.

- You can enter either here or by directly putting it on our FB wall here: https://www.facebook.com/2000adartcomp/

YOU HAVE UNTIL THE 30TH OF OCTOBER WHERE WE SHALL ACE THE VOTING GARP, GOOD BUDDIES!

01 October, 2016, 01:26:59 AM
FIFTH PLACE - JAMES NEWELL

FOURTH PLACE - WHATLEY

THIRD PLACE - ANDY LAMBERT

SECOND PLACE - IAMTHESYSTEM

FIRST PLACE - MARK HIGGINS

What a glorious turnout - 42 entries for 35 years of the blue-skinned wonder! I'd like to say in this most eclectic and busy of months that a photo finish first place was a definite but Mark Higgins achieved his second first place in a row by a remarkable landslide. 98 points to IATS' 48! The latter needn't feel too put-out though as forumer Woolly has very kindly offered a Rogue GN to whoever came second :D What a comp this is!

THARG'S CHOICE goes to ANTHONY COPPIN

...and for the second time this year I was unable to get a responsive droid - they're hitting the summer very hard in 2016 (alternatively: they're all chained fast to their cubicles for something coming up in early 2017 hmmm....). Rest assured though I'll poke the green one and snaffle an outlier for October's comp...

General / SEPTEMBER ART COMP - ROGUE TROOPER
02 September, 2016, 11:26:45 PM
35 years ago this month squaxx dek thargo witnessed the birth of one of 2000 AD's most enduring characters: ROGUE TROOPER

So this month to honour this glorious occasion we'll wander the chem-choked lands of the battered Nu Earth and pay tribute to the greatest genetic infantryman ever grown! His full history and lineage is open to you - from the legendary beginnings, to 1990s "FRIDAY" reboot, to Mercy Height's Tor Cyan and right up into the sadly short-lived IDW series. The wider world is fascinating but lets focus purely on the blue chaps.

There will be a GN straight from the nerve centre for the winner of course, and one for Tharg's Choice - and there will also be a bonafide 2000 AD droid choosing their favourite entries! All entries will be viewable here, on our dedicated FB page, and also on the official 2000 AD Tumblr and Twitter!

FOURTH PLACE - STEVEN DENTON

THIRD PLACE - JAMES NEWELL

SECOND PLACE - MIKED

FIRST PLACE - MARK HIGGINS

Blimey - certainly an eventful month, but we had a surge of positivity over the last fortnight or so that has pushed this into being one of the most productive in recent memory if not the entire history of the competition. Absolutely incredible - the bumper vote added to the intrigue and we had a last minute position switch around between the amazing MikeD and the stunning Mark Higgins.

I will say going over the entries again just now I was stunned to see I'd left out eamonn1961's piece "Stiff Competition" from the voting thread.

Sincere apologies to Eamonn for my oversight there - I hope this doesn't put you off contributing again!

THARG'S CHOICE goes to DAVID TIMONEY

...and our Droid's Choice this month comes from recent coverlord and rising international comics star RYAN BROWN

QuoteMark Higgins & Uwe de Bolt's Skull image (5th and 1st above). I think these are my two favourites, they are simple ideas and work really well, they could be covers for 2000 AD!

Mark Higgins' image is really well done, the rendering is fantastic and there's depth to it. Uwe de Witt's image - I really like the contrast of Dredd's helmet to the rest of the image it stands out really well, the shine on the glass and the skull look great.

There where so many images I liked it was hard to pick my favourite I can see future 2000 AD artists in there if they all keep up the hard work :)

YOU HAVE 'TIL THURSDAY
#52
After narrowly avoiding a "Summer Offensive" theme July's winner Adrian Bamforth has plumped for something rather topical:

QuoteTHE DEATH OF DREDD.

The eldster isn't getting any younger. He's beaten more perps than you've sold hot cakes but one of the real narrative thrills of Dredd is the real-time element. As we sag, Dredd sags and one of these days you can be certain he'll go the way of all flesh. So how will he meet his untimely demise? Choking on a hottie? Dog vulture? Mutant potato? In a hail of bullets or just tripping over? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO WEAR YOUR BOOTS SO TIGHT, DREDD?!

From James Newell via an enquiring FB user simply called Halo Jones:

Quote"The Ballad of Halo Jones Book 4" or what might have been...

Where did she go... she went out.

Alan Moore & Ian Gibson's seminal 80s 2000 AD masterpiece Halo Jones was notable for many things, not least of which was that it was never finished. Moore & Gibson both have ruminated in the decades since of where she might have gone - Moore expressing several times he was keen to continue her adventures into much later life. Where would you have her go next?

There will be a GN straight from the nerve centre for the winner, and one for Tharg's Choice - and there will also be a bonafide 2000 AD droid choosing their favourite entries! All entries will be viewable here, on our dedicated FB page and on the official 2000 AD Tumblr!!

Rules for the art comp are these:

- For this comp especially but generally for all future comps be RESPECTFUL of the source material, needlessly explicit entries will not be tolerated.

- You can enter as many times as you like but bear in mind it will split your vote so it may not be worth it.

- All entries have to be constructed specifically for this competition - so nothing you've done for anything else.

General / JUNE ART COMP - RESULTS THREAD
02 July, 2016, 06:55:14 PM
THIRD PLACE - MARK HIGGINS

SECOND PLACE - ANDY LAMBERT

FIRST PLACE - JAMES NEWELL

WOW! What an amazing month - a ton of entries and votes were close however James Newell's astonishing pulpy film poster was a dead cert!

Remember you can find out about those behind the pictures and more over on the comp Facebook page --> https://www.facebook.com/2000adartcomp

THARG'S CHOICE goes to BRENDAN MEACHEN

...and our Droid's Choice this month comes from 2000 AD art dynamo and co-creator of modern classic Kingdom: RICHARD ELSON

QuoteI've been following the entries as they came in and there were a couple of stand-out pieces for me but I'd like to mention a few others that I really enjoyed first.

Flight to the Death by Andy Lambert really appealed to me as it illustrates a scene from the first issue of 2000AD that I ever bought. I've always been a massive Brendan McCarthy fan and I loved his giant, mutant birds.

I really liked the Moebius tribute by Bhuna and Neil McClements - Brian Corocoran's action shot - Jan Lyew captures a real attitude and relationship between the characters of Dredd and Chopper in his pic - Uwe de Witt's very strong run of entries, especially the 1st and 4th - Great to see 'the' Steve Baskerville (who inked me on a Tyranny Rex strip back in the 90s) making an appearance and Mark Higgins' excellent young Chris Weston look-a-like Chopper (really nice lighting and sense of structure on that upper leg in particular).

My two favourite pieces were Shaolin Monkey's sculpture of Will Simpson's design for the mad-robot-chef Cookie (inspired work of a great character that for some reason makes me smile every time I look at it) and the action packed epic that is James Newell's Midnight Surfer. James' piece just takes the top spot for me. Really strong composition/lighting and full of great ideas: - Dredd merging with the buildings of Mega City 1, the wake of Chopper's board merging with the flash highlight on Dredd's visor, Chopper escaping the walls of the city - symbolised by the towering letters of the words Midnight Surfer. Powerful stuff. A really well thought out and executed illustration that tells a story in a single image. Great work James.

There were some really excellent entries here. I can't believe the amount of time and effort so many people put in to making this such a strong month. Thanks to you all for making this such an enjoyable competition to follow. I look forward to seeing more great artwork in the coming months,

Staying in the Dreddverse this month - from Tharg's Choice for May Uwe de Witt:

QuoteI'd love to see a Chopper-comp

SO CHOPPERCOMP WE SHALL!

Marlon Shakespeare (a creation of John Wagner & Ron Smith ) is one of the Dreddverses most iconic cit characters. Will you explore his early years as a restless wall scrawling teen? His daring escape from Justice and race towards Supersurf 10? The bloody and tragic events of Supersurf 11? His return to the big meg and face-off with Dredd? Or now, in his old age in Oz?

Regular artistic collaborator to many many small press ventures perhaps we could put some of his art up here - I'll start with what I said on FB...

He wrote and drew this story for the first Psychedelic Journal about a knight who fails to learn the meaning of life by doggedly pursuing his quest rather than embracing opportunities as he travels through abbreviated time.

Stephen seemed to embrace every single artistic opportunity that came his way, supported every small press anthology and threw himself every art jam - whipping up pieces sometimes in moments. His relentlessness was dizzying. His dedication tremendous. I am honoured I worked with him, and am inspired by his endless fervour to draw more, to take those opportunities that seem frightening and hurl himself towards them,.

That is the meaning of life.

General / MAY ART COMP - THE APOCALYPSE WAR
01 May, 2016, 11:53:47 AM
In 2014 we did The Day the Law Died

In 2015 we did Block Mania

and courtesy of April winner Simon Prime this month we will be delving into the first big epic in Dredd's history...

QuoteTHE APOCALYPSE WAR

Running between Progs 245 - 270 and drawn by the legendary Carlos Ezquerra over a stunning 25 episodes the Apocalypse War saw the large-scale invasion of Mega-City One by the Sov-Blok and the subsequent destruction of East-Meg One. It contains a ton of iconic visual moments to pick from - but if somehow there are squaxx without a copy of this classic conflict to hand the Future Shop has your back and the entire saga from Block Mania to the bitter end in prog 270 is featured in the fifth volume of The Complete Dredd Case Files.

There will be a GN straight from the nerve centre for the winner, and one for Tharg's Choice - and there will also be a bonafide 2000 AD droid choosing their favourite entries! All entries will be viewable here, on our dedicated FB page and as of this month on the OFFICIAL 2000 AD TUMBLR.
