Film & TV / King of Kong
30 August, 2011, 09:40:12 PM
Just a heads-up -- if you've got Sky or Virgin, obscure channel Current TV is showing The King of Kong this Thursday (1st Sept) at 8pm (repeated on Saturday at 2pm), as part of their season of "50 greatest documentaries".

For those not in-the-know, it's a fly-on-the-wall doc following the battle between the man who holds the world record on Donkey Kong and his new arch-rival.  It's cute, it's slightly manipulative, but overall it's entertaining.  You've never seen so many scary haircuts in one room, not even at a comic con.

Definitely recommended.

Personally, I'm up for a Synnamon crossover with Black Widow.  Preferably something involving swimsuits.  With an Alan Moore style exploratory lesbian sub-plot.  Oh yes.

General / Rude words in progs
22 August, 2011, 01:19:07 AM
Dear Mr. Tharg,

Whilst gaining pleasure from your famous organ in the civilised comfort of my bed on a Saturday morning, I was forced to gasp in astonishment at the rampant insertion of a rude word in the background of Prog 1748's Dredd.  I nearly choked on my muffins.

As a right-minded citizen I am disgusted, etc., at having a 'CLIT' thrust in my face while reading.  I am referring, of course, to the background sign 'Titty Clitty Bang Bang'.  Over the years I have come to expect sexual interference from John Smith but I am not used to this kind of thing in the hands of John Wagner.

What I want to know is:

  • What are you going to do about this wanton gynaecological intrusion?
  • Is this the first time that the word 'clit' has appeared in the Galaxy's Greatest?

Yours,
Outraged of Southport

(Loving Ben Willsher's art by the way)

Film & TV / Re: Chris Weston vs Dr Who
21 August, 2011, 05:19:50 AM
Chris Weston's arguments seem to centre on two points: over-sentimentality and story arcs.

Yes, the emotion is laid on rather thick -- especially with David Tennant's switch-on-the-tap facial modes (angry / sad / serious / I'm loopy I am).  But then again that's pretty much a fault with most modern TV writing.

As for the story arcs?  Well, there are pros and cons to both episodic and serialised forms but I'd rather have something I can get my teeth into than the vapid wrap-it-all-up-by-the-end nonsense we see on stuff like Voyager or Stargate.  The idea that characters grow and change (and even die) through their adventures is a fundamental principle of literature.

The long-term approach is one of the few things keeping Doctor Who above the water at the minute.  Some stand-alone episodes can work well (e.g. Dalek, Doctor's Wife) but the majority (e.g. recent pirates one, big whale, that one with Peter Kay) show just how disposable the show can be.  And if you lose your audience with a poor episode one week they may not bother with the next.

To flip the thread on its head, I thought it'd be nice to show some non-infringement merchandise -- a bright ray of sunshine among the rip-off tat to give us hope that things are still done the right way by some people.

This appears to be fully licensed by Egmont back in 1995 (see top of large helmet badge).  It has (what I presume is) original artwork, and it's nicely composed, too.  Anybody know the artist(s)?

I misread this thread title as LEGO Century: 1969 and got all excited.

"Ooh, Mr Quartermain -- you're quite a stud."

I-thank-you.

Astonishingly, quite a few people do actually have sex.

Yes. They're usually behind closed doors where we can't see though. Well... unless you're a peeping Tom, or you're at a certain common during the mating season. Point is, to see it, you usually have to go out of your way to look for it.

In comics the people having the sex are usually a lot more more attractive than the people having the sex in real life.

The trouble is if John Smith goes that's it I'll turn into a ridiculous fanboy if I meet him.

Tell him your name is Scott Nestel.  That'll spice up the conversation.
