Is it just me or do some of these sketch cards look a bit ropey? Some of them look kind of like fan art, and i don't recognise the artists on an awful lot. The McNeil ones are nice though.

COMMANDO FORCES

Some of the artists are trading card artists and have nothing to do with 2000ad at all

I'm in danger of having my fanboy card rescinded for this but ... can someone explain the point? I buy comics to read the stories but I've never really understood this obsessive collectomania for 'trading' cards (unless in you're in primary school, when "swaps" was a vitally important part of the playground economy). For us grown up fans it just seems that a lot of these peripheral cards and stuff are just a scam to part us from our groats.
Or am I missing the point - are these original signed sketches?
Bah humbug etc etc.

In this set by strictly Ink you get a set of normal trading cards which have pics taken from the vast catalogue of images from the House of Tharg. Then you also get the rare sketch cards, of which some are shown previously. The breakdown to the sketch cards is, 1 per 2 boxes, or near enough.
As you can see there are sketches from many a 2000ad droid on show but also included are sketches from sketch card artists.
As said on the 2000adreview forum I don't see how those artists would entice 2000ad fans to buy the cards but hopefully they might make people who like their art delve into 2000ad (well you can but hope).
I personally think Warren Martineck's stuff looks quite good.

Anyway have a look at their site

By the way us grown ups have lots of disposable income and we have to spend it on something. I'm long past wasting all mine on booze

I've never understood why people bother with trading cards - might as well buy POGs, IMO - but good luck to you all.

Maybe I'll buy one packet for interest, and use them as bookmarks.

COMMANDO FORCES

Yep, I bought both sets of POGS as well. I have money to burn, well you can't take it with you so you might as well spend it on something!

Trout

POGs? That's spending it on nothing!

Sorry - as a collector of all sorts of comics-related tat, I can hardly throw stones. I just don't understand trading cards.

At least a comic you can read.

Most of those sketches are quite poor really and I have to admit I'd feel very disapointed if I found one in a pack I'd bought if it didn't have a Rufus, McNeill or even McRea (and I don't even like his art) sketch in it.

Who are these guys, and why are they drawing 2000ad characters?

The manufacturers should have got ONLY 2000ad artists to supply sketches for the cards.. I want to see a Gibson Halo Jones, not some cross eyed bint drawn by someone I've never heard of.

Maybe the second run (if there is one) will concentrate more on actual 2000ad contributors.

COMMANDO FORCES

Well I am Well Happy as my first official sketch card is Judge Giant by Rufus. If you go to the sketch page and click on Rufus's card a pile of his pop up and Judge Giant is top right, GET IN!

For me, it's a great way of enjoying some classic Dredd/2000ad artwork and characters without having to trawl through all my back issues.

Ages ago I ordered a box of these and a nice binder so hopefully they'll come next week. I have a query though - will the binder already have those plastic pockets in to collect the cards or will I have to buy some? If I do have to buy 'em, where's the best place?

Ta in advance!

You normally get several sleeves included with the binder. If you should require any more, here's a good place to buy.
