any seen the trailer?

looks great,
ok some retreads here,
death row inmates made to play a game of survival, fight to the death, winner gets freedom, yes arnie did it with aplomb,

but this is slightly differnt. its suggesting XBOX LIVE/playstation network/nintendo online,
is the game(subtext style)
you play the solider your moves, button moshing his actions. log in,he is your avatar.

could have been lifted from 2000ad,or fit right in for a future shock. but the overall actoin drama, with the where is all this online gaming going, is a good solid basis for a potenailly good movie.
rett butler i think is the lead and Micheal hall for the protaganstic.

first impressions, we boarders may get a kick out of it. especailly the gamers amongst us.
I AM VERY BUSY!
PJ Maybe and I use the same dictionary, live with it.

NO 2000ad no life!

I'm looking forward to it too, it's got that sick queasy future-blood sport thing down pretty well. I remember finding movies like The Running Man genuinely a little disturbing, but stuff like Death Race (Statham) were just shit. This looks like it's got that eighties spirit running through it, plus a gaming angle so I'm sold.

I saw the trai...... hang on, Death Race... shit?
No way man. Love that flick. Great movie to put on after the pub.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this as its by the guys who did Crank and I'm a really big fan of that.  Looks like fun

i'm sure steve Austin was in this movie with vinnie jones
"Save Trees, Eat Beavers"
"Animal Rights: Animals have the right to be tasty"

Professor Bear

'Stone Cold' Steve 'the Bionic Wife-Beater' Austin was in Condemned with Vinnie Jones, which was oddly half-decent for what it was - a Battle Royale/Running Man riff with wrasslers.  The straight-faced speech about the morality of violence as entertainment in an action movie made by a wrestling company is hilarious for chutzpah alone.

You're quite right for calling me on that, I should have just said I didn't enjoy it! To be honest I thought the idea and look was good, but I didn't like the way the actual action had been shot. All quick cuts and constant movement, I know it was supposed to make it exciting but it just meant I couldn't ever see any detail of what was going on so what should have been thrilling just didn't do it for me. I'd love to see the same movie but with shots that are wide and steady enough to appreciate what were probably pretty awesome stunts. After the pub my opinion would likely improve though!

I didn't know what you were talking about , but it sounded cool.

It looks good from it's trailer and what has been said already.

I like the concept for the poster.

Reminds me of my 2000AD collection, but mostly with regards to one particular character.

Went to see this yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed this one. Didn't listen to any of the critiques who said it was like this film or nicked bits from that film. So what if the concept wasn't original. There are not many new films that can boast originality any more.
If you like a good splatterfest movie then go for it.

I enjoyed this enough, it was exactly what I expected from the eighties throwback trailer, exceptthat at times it got a bit over-excited. I wasn't keen on Crank because I thought the directors were constantly trying too hard to bombard you with style without any smarts, and they do the same thing quite often with this, and it gets a bit wearying. There's something about that style of film-making that comes across as really juvenile to me, it's all "AND LOOK AT THIS AND NOW THIS AND I'VE GOT ANOTHER IDEA OVER HERE AND OH PLEASE LOOK!!!!!" and it just gets a bit unintelligible. Also a lot of the gaming references were pretty leaden, I got the impression the writers don't actually play games so just researched some buzz words. Plus, Society potentially has a much more interesting movie in it that Slayers, in the hands of someone else that could be proper classic sci-fi.

I'm being overly harsh though for something you're not really supposed to take your brain along to. It wasn't dreadful, was a fun way to waste a couple of hours, but instantly forgettable unfortunately. It did make me want to play an online shooter though so spent a good day afterwards playing F.E.A.R.2!

Just saw it. There's some goodish shooting and a particularly fine lady's derriere but myself and my mate both sat there and said "what the fuck?" when the credits rolled.

My abbreviated review...shite.

Edit. Gerrard Butler is good at the action stuff. But it's still shite.

Tiplodocus

Really didn't enjoy this.

It's definitely a film of two halfs; the first half being the game and the second being his search for his wife and daughter. Neither of which works at all as far as I was concerned. It takes the few good ideas it has and throws them away in a frenzy of frantically edited nonsense (yes, it's another one of those action movies where you really can't see what is going on).

Even the three main "battles" of the film lack structure and focus; you never really see what makes KABLE/TILLMAN (Gerard Butler) such a stone cold killer at the game; he just seems to survive. I was however pleasantly suprised at the low key nature of the finale.

Plus points: Gerard Butler finds a novel way to refuel a vehicle (Utterly barking but amusing). CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE gatecrashing a SIMS rave. The villain does a song and dance number.

Minus points: Pretty much everything else - some of it offensively so.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!

bluemeanie

I really didnt like this movie at all.

I'm no prude or anything but the live action porn sims stuff just made me uncomfortable.
Worst crime of this movie though was that it just wasnt fun. The Crank flicks have a rocking sense of humour to them. This one didnt and I thought it suffered because of it.
Shame as I was really looking forward to it
