My present job doesn't exactly have a shining future. Aside from the company being on shaky ground, I'm also in an industry that is slowly dying (mail). Apart from that, it's been making me ill with stress over the last 18 months and has turned me into a grumpy prick with no social life.

I'm an Engineer by trade and I sat down and had a good think about what I want to do and narrowed it down to a couple of fields that really interested me. At the top of the list was 3D printing / rapid prototyping or robotics, but in truth (and to be realistic) I would be happy to jump ship for any job that matched my skills and paid enough to support my family.

To start the ball rolling I updated my CV and put in a search on a website that specialises in technical recruitment. I kid you not, the second search result that came up was for an Engineer working on 3D printers.

Fast forward 3 weeks and 4 interviews later and I am now 3/4 of the way down a bottle of Champagne and trying to word my resignation letter to send in on Monday  :D.

This technology could well be the biggest thing since the internet and I am like a little kid with excitement. My brain has released the 18 months worth of endorphins it has been holding back (could be the bubbly though) and I'm about to go and upstairs and apply for another kind of "job" with the wife.
Please don't let me fuck either of them up  :D.

Fantastic stuff Rog, wish I had your get-up-and-go.  If you haven't read it, you must find yourself a copy of Bruce Sterling's short story 'Kiosk' immediately.  Well, after attended to pressing business of course.

Congratulations, Rog. Did everyone see the wee robot the 3D printer made on Qi at the weekend. Indistinguishable from magic (26m 23s):

Definitely Not Mister Pops

You may quote me on that.

Brilliant stuff Rog, sometimes, just when you need it to, everything just sorta falls into place.
Good luck!

Crap, did I really end my post with that , this forum needs a breathaliser.

Yes, I did catch that Sauchie, fantastic stuff. It could well have been created using the kit that I will be working with (the Objet range), it certainly has the capability to produce prints like that.

Thanks for the story recommendation Tordelback, I'll certainly be checking it out and thanks to everyone for the good wishes.

Ive just- almost- finished making the kids' scratch built halloween costumes. A few odd bits and bobs tomorrow and they'll be ready for the school disco on thursday. I will hopefully be showing off some photos tomorrow night- and yes, it is on topic my lovely friends!

After all the terrible news, finally we get some good news.

Depending on your perspective, there's still an awful lot of that kind of good/bad news to come out of this horrendous story.

The wife got her first tattoo on Friday (it was a thing for charidee), and knowing of old that I generally dislike tattoos on ladies (sorry, ladies, can't help it), she has been extra nice to me all weekend because I haven't kicked up any kind of a childish fuss about it.   I've actually been able to get some work done in peace as she wrestles with the kids.

Of course what she doesn't know is that what with me being in my 40s, eternally grateful to her for all she does, aware that she is an adult and an individual, and not considering her to be my property, I'm not remotely bothered.  I just haven't quite got round to explaining this to her.  Listen to that: it's silence, broken only by the clack of my keyboard.  Ahhhhh, that's nice.   Gawd but I can be a right shit.  :D

I should take your advise Tord.
Once my wife had her hair cut far too short, just below her shoulders, and I made her cry by having a go at her. I know what a cunt I was. The hairdresser (whome was a good friend of ours) stayed well away for a while. I know what cunt I was.
Thing is now I wouldn't be that bothered unless it is cut higher than a bob. I know what a cunt I was.

I just got an email to say I won Leigh Gallaghers raffle to be drawn into a future episode of Defoe.  :D
