The original America (Judge Beeny's mother) was a pro-democracy "terrorist" , and she was gunned down by Dredd and a squad of judges on the steps of the statue of liberty. They could have simply arrested her, but decided on a huge show of force as a warning to other potential lawbreakers. This story appeared in the Megazine rather than the prog, but has been reprinted several times since.

Not so - that's typical Dem propaganda!  ;)

America (Jara) was severely wounded by shrapnel from the terrorists' own exploding vehicle, and Dredd had ordered his men to hold fire.  She was shot against his direct orders as she staggered up the steps towards the Statue, and the judge responsible was charged (albeit very mildly disciplined subsequently).  The wisdom of the force used on the cell in the first place, and the lenient treatment of the judge are both in question, but Dredd did not "gun down"  Beeny's mother instead of arresting her.

The more I thoink on this the more I think this needs to go into the Casefiles as an extra, and fairly soon - it's not a long story.  As the coming Casefiles currently only cover 6 months at a time, and the story covers a loooong period of time, there's a bit of wiggle room there.

flesario

Please, that's enough of talking about what actually happens in these comics. Much more importantly is there available a potted history of newspaper Dredds? I would cut out the Daily Star W/G Ron Smith ones when I was a kid- I think were in on Saturdays- and have some of the reprints. How long was he in the Metro for, and were the episodic Ian Gibson illustrated ones also DSDs?

I hope a compilation include all newspaper Dredds, even the rubbish ones.

Large48

I think Leigh is the expert here, but here's my attempt......

There were about 280ish of the Saturday Strips - mostly by the Mighty Ron Smith (260), but with a few later ones by Gibson, at least one Ewins one (264).

Daily Strips

Ron Smith and Gibson then did the first daily tales, with Barry Kitson doing one before Mike Collins appeared as a semi-regular. His first ones are brilliant tales like "The Real Judge Dredd" and "Sheriff of Festering Hole" (a personal fave). However, after a period of goodness, Wagner & Grant retire and we get Mark Millar and Alan McKenzie written Daily Star Dredds - then Carlos Pino appears, Ron Smith returns at least. The strip gets a bit of a new lease of life when Robbie Morrison, Gordon Rennie and Andy Diggle start doing strips, with Smith.

Thanks large48, that's quite eye-opening, there's tons there I've never heard of. I agree, sounds ripe for a meg article!

Cooper- casefiles three and five respectively.

That list just about does it -

Wagenr and Grant write all those Daily stories up to the incredible (for all the wrong reasnons!) "Return of the peeper".  If you thought Millars Dredds in the priog were ropey, these actually take it into Plan 9 from outer space territory and i think i'd actually enjoy them in a so abd they are good kind of way, knowing that Dredd was ultimately rascued from the hands of savages! :)

Theres a gap as my source of Daily star Dredds dried up around 91 and i wasnt about to start buying the Star just to get McKenzie and Millar Dredd!  Managed to fill in some of the gaps up until 94 from a comcics convention and had already started picking up later when i found another direct source some time in 96, but I'm not sure what stories occured in 94 to 96 - the numbering goes haywire between those two periods, so if anyone collected them during that time, please get in touch!

Later stories, as you can see ahve a lot of other artists come in, as well as writers - DAvid Bishop, Andy Diggle, Robbie Morrison and Gordon Rennie all step in to releive Millar and Morrison of their duties. Depsite the quality improving after this, the strips sadly got binned when the Star decided it was cheaper to fill the page with Princess Di's astrologer than with comic strips (would you trust Princess Di's astrologer??? )

I ahve heard that Rebellion were supposed to have taken "custody" of the Daily Star Dredds from the paper a good while ago, though whether this happened in the end, and whether the archive was complete, I still dont know.

Case files are the stories from the progs and megs, Restricted Files are all the other stories from specials and albums ect that were missed out of the Case Files run.
