My Digital Pulls
2000 AD #1817 - Keeps trucking along with the same line-up since the new year. I hear Savage ends this issue. And thank god, last episode was atrocious.
INVINCIBLE #100 - The big 100 is finally here. I saw a preview of the first few pages of this issue. But I won't link it, because its pretty spoilertastic. I'm seriously wondering what happens next. As it is, I'm pretty stoked about another book I'm reading now having an issue number above 100. Invincible is also one of the few I've read from the beginning to reach that number. I can't even say that about 2000 AD or Savage Dragon (also I didn't start reading Fables until issue 6, but now its on 125).
WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP #54 - A new Akira Toriyama one-shot runs this issue, my curiosity of which was the main reason I checked out the title last week. I think there's going to be more here to like then I expected, which is good news. Also no Yu Gi Oh! this issue. Which is better news. Also I can't get over how cheap this title is. Nearly 200 pages, weekly, for a dollar. ZOMG.

Small week, and actually two of the three aren't even on a Diamond shipping list due to being Digital exclusive.

At last! Someone else who reads weekly Shonen Jump! What are you opinions on the current line up by each strip?

Lucky for you I did a full write up over on ANN Forum because I've gotten suddenly hyped for Jump. So here's my opinions on the last two weeks. Keep in mind, this is my first encounter of many of these strips.

I'm going to get this out of the way, but Naruto is completely incomprehensible to me. Now, I coincide I'm picking up 617 installments in, and near the end of a major story arc. But I pride myself on my ability to pick up the general gist of things, and at least be able to the follow the broad strokes. I'm struggling to do that here. I think a lot of the problem stems from poor panel-to-panel transitions and poorly scripted dialog. I don't know. I doubt I'm ever going to get into this one.

Toriko on the other hand seems like its a lot of fun. Its core concept seems really silly. But its got some really boffo creature designs, and character designs that remind me of Fist of the North Star. Reading this lead to me to checking out the free preview to the first volume. I'm not sure if I'm going to jump right on catching up, but its on my short list. So not a bad impression.

One-Punch Man was actually the title that really got me to pull the trigger on picking up my first issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. It was new and its concept seemed like a lot of fun. I enjoy super-hero satire, and this one seems to have that in spades. Its also got some wicked slick artwork, some nice humor, and crazy monster designs. I love it.

One Piece is suffering similar to Naruto in some respects. Being long running, at the end of a story arc, and having some really odd panel to panel transitions that makes it really easy to lose the plot. On the other hand its not quite as bad as Naruto, and it seems to have a lot to offer. I'm hoping to warm up to it as it moves on to its next arc. Reading the first volume of the series is on my 'to do' list at some point.

Bleach is also in the Naruto/One-Piece camp where I don't really care about it, or what's going on. But the art is much clearer in some respects then the others. So its marginally more interesting to read.

Nisekoi and Cross Manage are of the high school drama genre that I actively dislike. Nisekoi in particular is rather forgettable. Oddly enough I'm actually liking Cross Manage quite a bit. Even if its rather by the numbers.

Now, Kintoki, the whole reason I bothered taking a chance in the first place (because I read a news article about it last week). That was FUN! I'm a big fan of early Dragonball, all the adventure and weird creatures, and funny character moments. Unfortunately it all sort of devolves into dull tournament style situations. Kintoki recaptures a lot of that early Dragonball adventure and humor IMO. Though Toryama does seem to recycle a lot of his classic motifs here, I think it works pretty well over all. Especially as a one-off. I would be really interested in reading more. As it stands apparently Dragon Ball Z is coming back next week for a full color run. Its a known quality, so I'll probably enjoy it well enough for what it is. But it is kind of an unexciting new addition.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. Probably for good reason. A waste of good artwork *bleach*

So yeah, there you go. My opinions on Weekly Shonen Jump. Like certain parts of the anatomy, everyone has one. At the moment One-Punch Man is my major draw, while I'm really hoping One-Piece and Toriko step up to the challenge. Not a great ratio, but its a freaking dollar. I'd pay a dollar for One-Punch Man alone.

Indeed, One-Punch Man is a superb piece. You may want to look into D.Gray-Man, a series that moved over to Jump Squared I think. Of all the Shonen series I feel it's amongst the closest to a toothy story in tone, possibly as it's set in a British environment (Though it lakc's alot of the Englishness seen in other manag of the like such as Hellsing) and it's a hell of a lot of fun.
On Bleach/ One Piece/ Naruto. Naruto has never meant much to me, prity bland tbh. I've always had a soft spot for Bleach, if you can you should read the first two arcs as their an amazing bot boiler with a genuinly gob smacking twist towards the end. The series lost alot of steam after the 4th and 5th went on WAY to long and the big bad kept pulling Deux Ex Machina out of his arse at every turn.
One Piece is dumb, silly fun that I enjoy for what it is. Nothing great but at least worth a dollar in your currency.

2000 AD #1818 - Looks like I was wrong about Savage ending last week. Damn it. Except for Savage the current line-up is pretty strong here,
FAIREST #12 - Meh. I'm getting really apathetic to this story arc, to the point that I haven't bothered to read last month's issue yet. This series is no Jack of Fables I'll tell you that.
FAIRY QUEST #1 - Might take a shot on this one, I do like Humberto Ramos.
GUARDING THE GLOBE #6 - Apparently this is the last issue before the title changes to Invincible Universe? Or maybe there are 8 issues? I'm actually not sure. At any rate, good series is good.
MUDMAN #6 - About freaking time. I've actually forgot the plot threads on this one. That's not good. But I'm glad to see it.
MULTIPLE WARHEADS: ALPHABET TO INFINITY #4 - Final issue of this brillant mini-series. Though I get the slight feeling that nothing has really happened in the last three issues. Except for your usual Brandon Graham madness.
THE HYPERNATURALS #8 - DnA own zone. 'nuff said.
THINK TANK #5 - This series has been a welcome surprise. A fascinating sci-fi thriller. Though its main characters needs to get knocked down a peg. He's a little too good at everything he does.
WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP #55 - This week we get the start of another run of Dragon Ball Z. Only this time in color. Kind of yawn inducing. Also this issue has two strips I haven't encountered before because they are monthly; Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration and Blue Exorcist, so we'll see what they bring to the table.

2000 AD #1818 - Looks like I was wrong about Savage ending last week. Damn it. Except for Savage the current line-up is pretty strong here,
FAIREST #12 - Meh. I'm getting really apathetic to this story arc, to the point that I haven't bothered to read last month's issue yet. This series is no Jack of Fables I'll tell you that.
FAIRY QUEST #1 - Might take a shot on this one, I do like Humberto Ramos.
GUARDING THE GLOBE #6 - Apparently this is the last issue before the title changes to Invincible Universe? Or maybe there are 8 issues? I'm actually not sure. At any rate, good series is good.
MUDMAN #6 - About freaking time. I've actually forgot the plot threads on this one. That's not good. But I'm glad to see it.
MULTIPLE WARHEADS: ALPHABET TO INFINITY #4 - Final issue of this brillant mini-series. Though I get the slight feeling that nothing has really happened in the last three issues. Except for your usual Brandon Graham madness.
THE HYPERNATURALS #8 - DnA own zone. 'nuff said.
THINK TANK #5 - This series has been a welcome surprise. A fascinating sci-fi thriller. Though its main characters needs to get knocked down a peg. He's a little too good at everything he does.
WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP #55 - This week we get the start of another run of Dragon Ball Z. Only this time in color. Kind of yawn inducing. Also this issue has two strips I haven't encountered before because they are monthly; Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration and Blue Exorcist, so we'll see what they bring to the table.

FAIRY QUEST #1 - Might take a shot on this one, I do like Humberto Ramos.

I've ordered both of these as Ramos is one of my favorites (which he'd hurry back to Spider-Man) and being split into a two part comic series is way more reasonable to my bank than the previous $40 book.

ROT comes to and with Animal Man & Swamp Thing #17 - looking forward to some drama (deaths?!) there.
I think Detective Comics #17 will be the last I buy before going back to the trades as it's the last "Death of the Family" tie in, which I've really enjoyed this event as a whole - some weak points but I think that's more to do with the weak comics Joker appeared in (Teen Titans for eg.)

I'm pumped for the arrival of the 4th TMNT TPB too. Bit of a quiet this week though.

Yeah I'm looking forward to the end of Rotworld. I've enjoyed it enough, and at times loved it, though in both books its felt a little safe and derivative. I think however when finished and the complete story is there it will most likely grow above and beyond its current measure and I hope standout as a wonderful 38 part story. Almost like an Image series or some such a great, self contained 'creator owned' (in feel though of course its not!) story with a solid beginning middle and end. I genuinely believe this one will grow when reviewed as a whole.

Cos of that I'm not sure about continuing the titles beyond this point. Animal Man I like the sound of where Jeff Lemire seems to want to go, grounding the series a little more. Swampie I've not really seen anything to inspire me about what's to come so I might just let it go and let Rotworld stand alone in that instance.

Its hales like this weeks that make me really glad with the shift I've made in my collecting habits. I'm now under half the number of my DC books and loving almost all the comics I'm getting. There's a few guilty pleasures, but when the majority are quality that's kinda cool.

Batwing 17 (speaking of guilty pleasures) isn't a good comic to be honest. The truth is though I still enjoyed the heck out of it. Glad there's a creative change coming, but I'll enjoy some dumb Nicieza fun while it lasts.

Caligula 2 and 3 (not sure why they were both in my bag this week?) is another guilty pleasure. Its silly and over the top, but I enjoy the heck out of it and there's chunks that are really well written. The art is a bit 90's mud period, though not so bad as to interfere with my pleasure.

The rest is pretty much gold. Earth 2 9 reminds me how good this book can be. Batman Inc 7 is just joyous fun. Rotworld might have had a slightly contrived end, that said both Swamp Thing and Animal Man 17 are a blast.

The highlights of the month (actually maybe Batman Inc should be here too?) are the always fantastic Jonah Hex (16) having a particularly wonderful episode, christ Moritat gets better and better and the story is a glorious change of pace. Plant of the Apes - Cataclysm 6, well I assume I'm not going to have to tell you how great this is, as you've all bought it after what I said last month... right, right... its just brilliant. Nowhere  Men 3 continues to build and intrigue. Its wonderfully crafted stuff and feels almost continental in tone to me. The happiness Mudman 6 brings in the return of this series is hard to underestimate. Owen is just a fantastic character and his world is so comfortable to visit and Paul Grist must be the most underestimated artist in comics. He's a genius.

I buy good comics.

2000 AD #1819 - Not gonna lie, I'm really eagerly waiting a line-up change-up. Not that anything's bad (except maybe Savage), but after two months I'd like to read something else.
BRAVEST WARRIORS #5 - Really fun series. But not sure if I'll continue after this arc.
CYBER FORCE #3 - Running late. Not sure if I'm digging it as much as I'd like. But its still Free.
GHOSTBUSTERS #1 - I've been curious about this series for a while, I figure the relaunch will be a good place to jump on. Also really curious about The Real Ghostbusters back-ups, since I grew up on that show.
JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE #332 - I think I'm switching to Digital on this issue. I really didn't want to (because I like having the bagged reprint material as a seperate book. But I have to face cost facts.
SAUCER COUNTRY #12 - Only a few more issues until an unfullfilling series cliffhanger, and then probably years of waiting for a conclusion. I am glad I stuck it out with this series. Its pretty neat.
STAR WARS #2 - First issue was better then I'd hoped. I hope Woods can keep it up.
THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS #9 - One of the best sci-fi series out there.
THE TRANSFORMERS: REGENERATION ONE #88 - Also one of the best sci-fi series out there, but for different reasons.
THE WALKING DEAD #107 - Really curious about what happened to Carl last issue. It's probably horrible. Or.. misdirection. One of those two for sure.
THRESHOLD #2 - Still waiting for the price to go down on the first issue before testing it out. That's probably bad, but there you go.
WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP #56 - New series World Trigger starts here. Turns out its just another high school based 'teens with powers' series. Not thrilled about that.
