We all need to do better, and call out the people (almost all men) being arseholes.

See, but that's perhaps what I find most depressing about the whole affair, and similar ones like it - those with the common sense to see how totally wrong it all is are in my opinion far too quiet on the matter, waiting for it pass by like similar incidents. But the thing is, what all these loud mouth pricks are is bullies - pure and simple - and the only way to shut up a bully is to refuse in their face to take or listen to their shit any longer. The alternative is that we ignore them and wait for them to go away - but what good will that have done once they rear their ugly heads again and start all over?

I don't feel that undermines anything and when it's already in the public forum, I suspect the press would get involved regardless.

CheechFu you're generally an informed and entertaining chap on matters internet, but really.  Merely participating in normal online activities shouldn't mean digging in to resist countless attacks on your character and threats against your person.  There is a vast disparity in the frequency, quantity and character of attacks when it's women online: yes, we've all enjoyed girding our loins and going in for a good barney on sites that are known for it, but for women it's almost any site or any topic where they dare to put their head above the parapet.  It's Calvin's G.R.O.S.S. rewritten with rape threats, and it's far more than 'people are just arseholes'.

It's a very sad, weird (online) world where the phrase "White Knight" is spat out with venom and used as a term of abuse.

A tiny portion of hateful lonely inmates are trying to run the vast asylum of games.

To summarise, when one side of an argument about perceived sexism and misogyny is routinely sending death and rape threats to the other, it should be fairly obvious which side you should be lining up behind, with none of the fairly shameful 'yes, but...' ("....yes, but apparently one of them's a bit of a slut."  "...yes, but feminists are kinda whiny and annoying, so...") stuff that we've heard even here.
