Seeing the trailer made me think that there could be some fun films with Han and Lando, more pulpy Sci fi less about jedi/Sith and destiny etc which is getting a bit dull. I think you do need the Empire in there to keep it Star Wars plus they make a great bad guy. Think one of the problems with the prequels and the new trilogy is that the bad guys are a bit fuzzy. Just hope it doesn't get too bogged down with origin stuff and that that bloke is ok as Han.

I know, bad example. Was just trying to say that the stuff that bugs me are the plot holes right in your face as you watch the film.

I think that there are different types of plot hole though, yes some films can be taken apart after the fact and shown to have plot holes, like Raiders and the way that Indy makes almost no difference to the outcome of the film. This doesn't matter to the film though as you're not aware of it. The stuff I have a problem with in a lot of modern films is that the plot holes/ lack of internal logic are glaringly obvious while you're watching the film. I'll often be thinking eh? Why are they doing that and there'll usually be some clunky explanation trotted out by the characters.

Went to see it again and enjoyed it a lot more. There's still bits I'm not keen on but I was able to filter them out and enjoy all the good stuff.

Yeah, I didn't mind the pacing, would have actually liked more mooching about and less talking!

The other thing was that the score was nowhere near as good as Vangelis's. The score is a massive part of why I love the original so much, the way it's seamlessly woven into the film becoming part of the sound design at times. The new one had some good bits but a lot of it just seemed atonal bwaaaarrm, I'm guessing Zimmer had to turn it around quickly as johansen was let go quite late on.
Anyway I'll stop going on, just feels like a safe place to vent here!

What Jim said! Plus I just didn't find the script as elegant and minimal as the original. Too much explaining. Bautista's have you ever seen a miracle line, most of Robin Wright Penn's lines and of course all of Leto's stuff.

Doubt this new one will be remembered as ground breaking and influential in 35 yrs though!

I never felt that way about the first one and it's still my favourite film. The new one just didn't grab me like the original.

Same here Jim. Reminds me a bit of those Sam Mendes Bond films. Massive amounts of talent making an incredibly slick and well made film but just not that engaging or memorable in the end.

Not a patch on the original for me, totally agree with your comments darnmarr.

There were some gorgeous shots, especially the Las Vegas stuff. Was a bit disappointed with the interiors though, I can see that they went for a less cluttered look to the first, I just found that they weren't convincing. They looked like sets, small ones too and the lighting was a bit bland. The  street level stuff didn't seem quite as real either.

Performances were good though, Leto was bad but not as bad as I'd feared! I liked K's baseline test. The music was ok in parts but not that memorable.

The plot was ok and the central mystery kept me hooked but the revelation was a bit naff.

I don't think all the ott reviews helped, I really didn't find it to be mind blowing insightful/intelligent Sci fi!

I'll give it another go but it just seemed to miss the point of the original for me.

I don't ink Cliff's covers, just colour them. Always fun.

Film & TV / Re: The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

My thoughts exactly Ade. I felt the same about Dark Knight( though looking back I think it's a lot better than Rises). They just feel like a collection of scenes where the characters don't speak, instead they just spout plot exposition. They clunkily explain who they are and whet they're going to do, or helpfully recap the plot for you. I don't like the way the action is integrated either it never feels part of the narrative more like a break in the plot exposition just for the sake of it. There was one point in particular this stood out for me when the special forces guys meet Gordon in their hideout. They have a big long chat about the plot and how to disarm the bomb or something and as soon as they're finished some random bad guys break in for a bit of a fight.

I really liked Begins it felt like a proper film with a good shape to it, and I loved the batmobile chase in it, nothing in the other two came close to it imho.

This new one really felt like 2hrs of build up to chase a ticking bomb, there were some good bits but tbh I was just looking forward to it ending.

I remember thinking uh oh when shaw said they'd been dead for 2000 years. The last question in this interview shows what they almost went for, very naff!! The fact that they didn't but still left the seeds in the script sums up the film for me.
