Firstly, Turn Tail is an amazing tune that I've not heard in ages, thanks for sharing ;D

I've been involved in music all my adult life and have done reasonably well out of some of it, so I'll add a couple of my favourites so's not to look like an arsehead  ;)

My 'I'm in a music video, me' moment: The Darkness - Get your hands off of my woman...
Sadly, this appears to no longer be on youtube. Nuts.

Nicest people in rock: Rob Flynn (Machinehead), Ginger (Wildhearts) and Joe Strummer have all taken the time to have conversations with me over a beer or three.

One comics related one - did very well in the open auditions for the Tank Girl movie (urgh!) and ended up in a lot of press.

...I've been trolling the messageboards (who knew their was such animosity between UKhippy and the tribal people!) and it seems that the council and police had it in for them for ages, but incompetent management and these draconian (and expensive) new licensing laws handed them every excuse they needed.

Basically the police dictated which expensive security company (stuarts or stewarts) they could use - these ex-job bouncers then demanded 60% of the fee up front at the eleventh hour and then pulled out even as the organisers were on the way with a cheque. They then inform the cops that all these dangerous radicals will have no security and....

Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated incident. I know of at least two other festivals this year that've been pulled last minute on exactly the same grounds. The licenses take forever to get sorted, by which time it's essentially too late to book your security and the whole thing gets shut down last minute leaving everyone out of pocket. Your experience does sound unusually pre-meditated by the 'authorities' though - you don't happen to know who this security firm are by any chance?

So, yeah. Life spugs because Tanky was supposed to play a set at one of these festies and will now be missing out on a paycheque she was going to use to move house with  >:(

QuoteAnyone else enjoy the festival circuit before they all had photo-IDs, security fences, cashpoints and police caravans, and before tickets cost about the same as a small car?

I kinda got the arse end of it, being a teenage crusty in the early 90s, but yes I do! Castle Morton, Torpedo Town, free fests and raves up and down the coutry. There were even several great parties that sprung up around protests (The anti-CJB march in London and the ANL rallies for example) By that point of course there were a lot of police caravans and all the crap that inevitably went with them, so I guess I missed out on the best bits! Since, I've probably been to just about every 'organised' festival going and had just as good a time. Glastonbury was great until the mid 90s when it all went horribly wrong, after that Reading was where it was at - Reading 98 remains my favourite weekend away ever. These days there's something on every weekend in the summer and we're spoilt for choice- if you have the dollar. This year Booga + I narrowed our holiday choices down to Rebellion or Download. We chose Download as it's actually cheaper at £160ish per ticket than a weekend in a B+B in Blackpool + tickets + beer! I ask you is that any way to run a punk festival?!

QuoteIf you've ever seen the Levellers...
Certainly have, back in the day. They just played down here last week. At £20 a ticket.  :D

That'll be the imaginatively named Church of Bones where I plan to get married should such a thing happen. Bit of a cliche, yes but as one of my friends got married in Vegas on Hallowe'en, you'll understand the bar's been set pretty high  :D

Quote from: "thinky"slight necropost, but i now live in christchurch nz and will be off to the armageddon expo for some much missed comicy-goodness

I went to armageddon in Auckland. I had a beer with some giant orcs, eat my own body weight in free ice cream, picked up loads of bargain reading material and nearly bought a bloody great sword until my roomie pointed out I'd never get it through US customs, let alone all the way home. It was a cracking day of much needed geekery after a couple months on the road. It's somewhat ironic that the UK conventions always seem to be just out of reach, yet I managed to do one as far from home as it's possible to get!
Hope it's all going well for you out there thinky. Wish I could join you!   :D

Batson, I think everyone feels that way at some point. Look at it as an opportunity - you don't have any commitments tying you down, what is it that you really, really want to do? It's a tricky question, I know and I was 30 before I could answer it for myself but one thing you do have right now is time to think about it and ways to make it happen.

Bar jobs are indeed a good start and are bloody good fun! Yes, some places do have a lot of student applicants, but don't forget that most of the are a) doing exams at the moment, so there might be some temp work going during which you can prove yourself. And b) they won't be around much over the hols either. Once you're in, you're in!

Lets see... at 23, I lived with the parental units, was on the dole and got smashed a lot. which is probably why that's about all I can remember!
You are not alone, my friend! Tx
